Gopura is also the Chair of IEEE Robotics and Automation Society Sri Lanka Section Chapter from February 2017[4][5] and chair-elect of IEEE Sri Lanka Section in 2019. He was the secretary of the same Chapter from 2013 to 2017. In 2015, Gopura was the secretary of IEEE Sri Lanka Section[6]. He is a senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and IEEE Robotics and Automation Society[7]. Ruwan Gopura is a founding member of Sri Lanka Robotic Meetups[8][9][10]. Early YearsGopura was born in Damunupola, Kegalle, Sri Lanka on 26 December 1978 and grew up in Kegalle in a family of six including his parents and his three brothers. He attended Damunupola Kanishta Vidyalaya and Kegalu Vidyalaya for his primary education and then attended Pinnawala National School for his secondary education. EducationAfter completing college at Pinnawala National School, Gopura entered the University of Moratuwa for his university education. He graduated from University of Moratuwa with a BSc Engineering (honours) degree in 2004 and he obtained his Master of Engineering in Manufacturing Systems Engineering from the same University[2]. He obtained his PhD degree in Robotics and Intelligent Systems from Saga University, Japan in 2009[11]. Gopura conducted postdoctoral research at the same university where he did his PhD. Professional CareerGopura started his professional career as a research assistant at the Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka in March 2004. Research CareerRuwan Gopura started his research career in 2004 soon after his graduation. He carried out his doctoral and post doctoral research on Bionics and assistive robotics[11]. Gopura developed the first ever robotic prosthetic arm in Sri Lanka with his research team in 2016 and the first ever lower extremity exoskeleton robot in 2017[12][13][14][15]. During recent years he has carried out research on Bionics and assistive robotics and his research outputs have been published in many reputed journals[16]. In addition to that several of his inventions have been patented in Sri Lanka[2]. Up to 2017, Ruwan has received award of excellence, Outstanding Research Performance of University of Moratuwa five consecutive occasions from 2012 to 2016. The assistive robotics research that he is carrying out will be helpful to physically weak people in the society[17][18].
