Ryan Stephan is an American professional basketball player who currently plays for the Tokyo Excellence in the Japanese B.League.

High School Career & Awards

Stephan attended Green Mountain High School in Lakewood Colorado where he was awarded Jefferson County 4A First Team All-Conference award as both a junior (2010-11) and a senior (2011-12), and 4A All-State Honorable Mention award as a senior.[1]

College Career & Awards

Stephan was signed by the Colorado Mesa University (CMU) Mavericks, in Grand Junction, Colorado. CMU participates in the NCAA Division II Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC).

2012–13: As a true freshman, Stephan saw action in all 28 games and averaged 4.5 points and 1.8 rebounds and scored a season high 14 points at Black Hills State.

2013–14: As a sophomore, Stephan started all 27 games, averaging 18.4 points and 6.6 rebounds. He scored 10+ points in 25 of 27 games and scored 20+ points 13 times. He scored a season-high 27 points vs. Colorado Christian University. Stephan led the Mavericks and finished third in the RMAC in field goal percentage at .579. He also ranked seventh in league in scoring, eighth in rebounding and seventh in blocks with 27.

2014–15: As a junior, Stephan started all 27 games, averaging 25.3 points and 8.5 rebounds, leading the team in both. He shot .575 (235-409) from the field – including 40 3-pointers – second-best on the team. He scored 30+ points seven times and recorded 10 double-doubles. He led the team with 172 made free throws and 38 blocks, which ranks fifth most in school history. In the summer of 2015, Stephan was recruited to play for the Southwest Metro Pirates in the Queensland Basketball League in Brisbane, Australia.[2]

Stephan's junior season highlights include:

  • November 14, 2014: Scored a new career high of 35 points against Dallas Baptist in the season opener on a neutral court. Stephan shot 13-of 18 from the field, including 3-of-4 from deep, and 6-of-7 from the line. He also grabbed nine rebounds.[3]
  • December 05, 2014: Scored 35 points against Chadron State, shooting 60% from the field, including 3-of-4 3-pointers and 8-of-10 free throws. He also grabbed a game-high nine rebounds.[4]
  • January 10, 2015: Scored a new career high of 40 points – including 5 for 5 from behind the arc – in a road win over previously unbeaten No. 2 University of Colorado Colorado Springs[5][6]
  • January 17, 2015: Eclipsed the 1,000 career points milestone with a 3-pointer against Western State Colorado University.[7]

Stephan's senior season highlights include:

  • December 19, 2015: scored 16 of the team's final 21 points – including the team's final nine points from behind the arc – against No. 24 Colorado School of Mines to help CMU erase a 14-point deficit with under seven minutes to go and tie the game and force overtime.[13][14] CMU went on to get the road win and Stephan finished with 36 points and game-high 11 rebounds.[15][16][17]
  • January 23, 2016: scored a new career high 42 points and another double-double with 14 rebounds in a road win against Chadron State.[18]
  • February 20, 2016: scored another new career high 45 points against Regis University – and tied the CMU single game scoring record – while also reaching the 2,000 point milestone for his career.[19] Stephan is only third player in CMU history to join the 2,000 point club.[20]

Stephan led the Mavericks to a 21-9 record – their best since 2009-10 – and concluded his CMU career #2 all-time in scoring with 2,073 points. He ranks in the CMU top ten in 15 different season and career categories. The CMU Criterion named him both the CMU Male Athlete of the Year and awarded him the CMU Moment of the Year for scoring 2000 points.[21] Stephan is only the second player from CMU to be named the RMAC Men's Basketball Player of the Year and holds 9 RMAC records.[22] He is the first CMU player ever to be named a National Player of the Year.

Professional Career & Awards

In May 2016, Stephan attended a tryout with the NBA's Denver Nuggets.[41][42]

In June 2016, Stephan signed with the Japanese B.League Tokyo Excellence to begin his professional career.[43][44] During his 2016–2017 rookie season with the Excellence, Stephan averaged 17.9 points and 10.8 rebounds per game and an overall efficiency of 21.
