Rajiv Gandhi Scheme For Empowerment Adolescent Girls under ICDS is a scheme launched by Central Government of India and implemented by Government of Odisha in 2011 for nurturing and assisting juvenile girls in the state under, providing them a healthy atmosphere for development. India has 120 million adolescent girls i.e 10% of the country's population.A large portion of it mostly those in rural and tribal area live life without being able to decide their future[1],According to Ministry of Human Resource Development(MHRD),62.1 million children are out of school,2011 census estimated that 84 million i.e 20% age group covered under Right to Education(RTE)ACT.Early marraige,Social & Economic factor,Complication in pregnancy,unsafe abortion causing the death of women of age (15-19)years the awareness about Adolescent Sexual and Reproductive Health is a vital part,Sexual Violence among juvenile girls causes the declination of empowerment of adolescent girls[2] ,low aspiration related to girls',marginalized communitise causes most of the dropping out

[3], Women and child development mission shakti (WCD-MS) estimated that 55,868 girls of age group (11-14)years are dropped out of school[4].In 2016 it shows that nearly 48% of women in india were anaemic,As per the Global Nutrition Report 2017,india having maximum number women impacted with anemia in the world ,more than half 51% of all women of reproductive age have anemia[5]. As per census 2011 , odisha constitute of 22% of juvenile population and there are approximate 3775,262 adolescent girls in the state.[6].from the report it shows that in odisha 61.4% adolescent girls suffer from anemia.In odisha Only 44% of enrolled children are girls and tribal girls makeup only 18% of total girls enrolled.[7].It is found that 50% of the rural girls are unaware of the meaning of menstruation in sharp contrast to only 6.7% of urban girls,lack of knowledge about proper marraige age,safe sex,use of contraceptive and family planning leads to vulnerability in health.[8] ,The analysis of the study revealed that the rural girls are unaware due to lack of education and knowledge,To empower and assist their development,the state government of odisha has launched many schemes such as Kishori Shakti Yojana,Khushi,Biju kanya ratna yojana,AAC and Sabla Scheme.

  • There are two major components under the scheme
  • Nutrition Component:
    1. For (11-14) years of age: Out of school girls.&91;10&93;
    2. For all girls age of (14-18) years.&91;11&93;
    3. Non Nutrition Component[12]
    4. For Out of school girls of age group(11-18) years & Vocational Training under National Skill Development Programme for girls in the age group of (16-18)years.&91;10&93;

Purposes:

  • Enhance their health & nutriment.They dont have idea about the diet to balance the blood loss[8]
  • Facilitate juvenile girls for empowerment & self-reliant.[13]
  • Raise awareness about education,health,hygiene,reproductive and sexual health,family and child care.
  • Upgrade home-based skills,life skills & tie up with National Skill Development Programmes (NSDP) for vocational skills[14]
  • Mainstream out of school AGs into formal /non formal
  • Provide information/guidance about existing public services such as PHC,CHC,Post Office,Bank and Police Station.

Coverage:

Juvenile girls(11-18) years in nine selected districts of the state i.e kalahandi,Sundargarh,Gajapati,Mayurbhanj,Bhadrak,Bargarh,Koraput,Puri & Cuttack.

  • Nutrition & Health Education
  • Health Chekup and Referral services
  • Iron and Folic Acid Supplementation
  • Counselling on family welfare ,Adolescent Reproductive and Sexual Health(ARSH) ,Child care practices and home Management.
