There has been no official relationship between the United States of America and Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic, since the U.S. has not recognized the sovereignty of SADR over Western Sahara.

History and current circumstances

The United States had involved in Western Sahara on the side of Morocco, its long standing ally, during the Western Sahara War.[1] Because of the U.S.'s alignment with the Moroccans, it didn't develop much favor toward Polisario Front, the main force on its struggle for freedom of Western Sahara, after the U.S. branded Polisario as a Soviet ally. Nonetheless, the U.S. has also refrained from taking measures, instead urging both to solve their differences.[1]

Since the end of Cold War, the U.S. has tried to maintain a pragmatic approach. The U.S. has not completely trusted its Moroccan allies due to their inability to defeat the Polisario, and has attempted to make analysis over the group.[2]

Baker Plan

{{main|Baker Plan}}

Former U.S. Secretary James Baker envisioned Baker Plan in expectation that would meet required demand between the Moroccan and Polisario independence group alike. However, the plan failed to materialize after neither Polisario or Moroccan Government were willing to settle their differences.[3]

Western Sahara peace process

Due to long-standing relationship with Morocco, the U.S. is seen favoring its Moroccan ally above Polisario. Nonetheless, the U.S. was able to not involved too much, particularly since 2000s, and has maintained a low profile key reason over the conflict; and has also aided the MINURSO.[4] The U.S. has also passed bill to separate aids to Western Sahara away from Morocco,[5] though relationship between the U.S. and Morocco remains cordial with another bill being announced as pro-Moroccan.[6]

The U.S. has been endorsing possibility of Moroccan annexation of the region.[7] However, on the same time, the U.S.'s participation of Western Sahara and its talk with Polisario also brought anxiety to Morocco, given hope and opportunity for Western Sahara's Polisario to be free from Moroccan occupation.[8]

Other issues

The 2026 FIFA World Cup bids was also marred by this conflict, as Donald Trump asked Morocco to choose the 2026 FIFA World Cup or Western Sahara; eventually, Moroccan bid failed to win the bid against joint Canada–Mexico–United States bid.[9]

While the U.S. has continuously supported Morocco,[10] Washington D.C.'s real position over the conflict has yet to be revealed, especially under Trump who had yet to side with either Morocco or Polisario.[11]
