Salary Finance is a financial technology business that improves the financial wellbeing of individuals across the globe by providing financial products and services that are easy to understand and access. It was incorporated in 2015.[1] by Asesh Sarkar (CEO), Dan Cobley[2] and Daniel Shakhani. It is headquartered in London and reaches over 600,000 people as of September 2018.

History

Salary Finance launched in September 2015 with the goal of helping millions of people out of debt and into savings. Its initial product was a loan that is offered by employers as part of an employee benefits package.

In February 2017 a financial education portal, Learn, was added to the Salary Finance proposition to help improve financial understanding.

In October 2017 the company announced a £40m Series A funding round led by original backers, Blenheim Chalcot, along with Legal & General who became an investor and supporter[3].

In January 2018 Salary Finance collaborated with Yorkshire Building Society to launch an instant access savings product that created a true debt to savings journey for their customers[4].

In August 2018 Salary Finance announced that they were launching in the US and that they had secured a $20m Series B funding round with existing investors Blenheim Chalcot and L&G[5].

How it works

Salary Finance partners with employers to offer its services as an employee benefit to their employees.

Both the lending and savings products work through salary deduction. An employee applies for a Salary Finance product and, if successful, will then make any loan repayments and/or savings deposits directly from their salary. This both simplifies the process for the customer and reduces overheads for Salary Finance. This means that, for the loan product, significantly better rates are on offer compared to alternatives enabling employees to save 2/3 on their interest costs[6]

Media attention

Salary Finance was listed as one of Forbes’ Five Exciting British Socially Responsible Start-Ups[7]

The company was recognised as one of KPMG’s Global FinTech 100[8]

Salary Finance was awarded Responsible Small Business of the Year 2018 by The Prince’s Responsible Business Network, Business In The Community.[9]

Also in 2018, The company’s savings product won WSB Benefits Innovation of the Year[10]
