Salsa on the Square, a 3CDC produced free event and part of the PNC Summer Music Series, created by Bill Donabedian and Nicholas Radina^[1][2], is an annual weekly summer music series which takes place every Thursday May though September from 7-10pm on Fountain Square in downtown Cincinnati, OH.

The event features live local, regional and national Latin bands specializing in Salsa, Merengue, Cumbia and Latin Jazz. In addition to the live music, local dance instructors host large dance classes teaching basic and intermediate Latin dancing. Food and drinks are also available.

Creation

While managing the transformation of Cincinnati's Fountain Square in 2007, 3CDC's Managing Director, Bill Donanbedian approached local Cincinnati musician Nicholas Radina to help create a "Salsa Night" on Fountain Square. Radina put together the concept of the event being a single live local latin band with local dance instruction, and with some feed back from a local Salsa fan, named the event "Salsa on the Square".^[3]. Donabedian left 3CDC in 2011^[4] to create Cincinnati's Bunbury and BuckleUp Music Festivals^[5]. Radina continues to program the event.

Early Success

After its introduction in 2008, "Salsa on the Square" showed growth^[6] drawing from Cincinnati's growing Latino population.^[7]

Time Changes

The official event ending time for the inaugural 2008 season was 9pm. The following 2009 season, the event ending time was permanently changed and extended to 10pm

In 2009 local photographer, writer and musician Victor Vélez created and published^[8] "Salsa on the Square-- The Book". The book features photography of fans, dancers, bands, and instructors at the event.

Guinness World Record Attempts

In 2013, Series sponsor, Proctor & Gamble, through their Gain brand utilized the Salsa on the Square event to attempt to break the Guinness World Record for most Salsa dancers.^[10]
