Sam Lipman is an Austin Texas-based composer, who works both in the commercial and the concert world. Having worked extensively in the jazz, rock and classical worlds, Sam has blended his roots in an original, yet true-to-canon style.

Most recently Sam composed score for Richard Linklater’s Where’d You Go, Bernadette with Cate Blanchett, Laurence Fishburne and Kristen Wiig for Annapurna Pictures, Deborah S. Esquenazi’s The Story of the San Antonio Four, and a symphonic work for the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, conducted by JoAnn Falletta. He’s also has also toured and performed with rock bands Shearwater and Okkervil River, and jazz musician Kurt Rosenwinkel. His newest work, an opera based on Caridad Svich’s Fugitive Pieces is currently being workshopped by Austin Opera.

Sam is resident composer for University of Texas's Theater and Dance Department, as well as UT’s Associate Professor of Screen Scoring. His accolades include a shortlist for an Oscar for Best Song In A Movie, an Austin Critics Table Award Nomination, Honorary Edward Cone Institute, the Russell Mallock scholarship, Kerrville Folk Festival’s Songwriter Award and first prize in the New American Voices contest.

Biography

Born and raised in Sydney, Australia, Sam played piano and violin at an early age with the Sydney Youth Orchestra. Sam later moved to New York City to study jazz saxophone with Joe Lovano and Mark Turner, performing often at Smalls Jazz Club and performing/touring with Kurt Rosenwinkel, Barney McAll and Jochen Rückert. Thereafter, he moved to Austin, Texas, switching over to rock music, performing and touring with The Ging’Bread Men, The Handsome Charlies, Golden Arm Trio, String, and his own Sam Lipman Band. Sam composed several works for the Austin Symphony Orchestra, including a series of television commercials for WalMart. He also produced several electronic music commercials for US Air Force, Southwest Airlines and BWM. Completing a masters in composition at the University of Texas, under tutelage of Dan Welcher, Sam composed many works for chamber groups, electronic, orchestral and piano, including a Harp Quartet commissioned by UT’s Harp Professor Delaine Fedson. Upon graduating he composed the ballet Crone which was nominated for an Austin Critics Table Award. Shortly afterwards, he scored several films, including Southwest of Salem, Texas Cotton and Where’d You Go Bernadette. He was hired as Resident Composer for UT’s Department of Theater and Dance as well as Head Accompanist, where he designed and scored a play for 18 speakers for Dan Caffrey’s Matawan. He’s currently working on Tree of Life, a choral work for the St. Stephens Madrigals that will premiere at Carnegie Hall in March 2019, as well as a commission for Piano and Cello by Zheng Hai, and program music for the coming TV show Australia.

Style/Theory

Linguistic vernacular is the basis of Lipman’s style. Going against the experimental style typically associated with composers from his generation, Sam works with the accumulated syntax of classical, jazz and rock music of the ages. His influences range for Miesclaw Weinberg, Paul Hindemith, Radiohead, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Mark Turner, Gustav Mahler, Sergei Prokofiev.
