She is currently a Recording Artist in Residence at Royal Birmingham Conservatoire.[1] Jazzwise magazine has described her as having an "unfailingly beautiful, richly expressive voice."[2] BiographyAfter growing up surrounded by music,[3] Colman studied classical piano at Royal Birmingham Conservatoire in the 1990s, also completing a Masters in Songwriting from Bath Spa University in 2010.[4] Her siblings Mat and Andrew are also musicians,[5] performing together as the Colman Brothers. In 1998, she self-released her debut album, Spellbound.[6] In 2002, Colman was a Jerwood Rising Star at the Cheltenham Jazz Festival,[7] whilst performing and recording in the same period with fellow vocalists Liane Carroll and Jacqui Dankworth in The Passion, the group releasing the popular album, One Good Reason.[8] Colman released her second album, Ready, in 2009, and performed a showcase at Jazzahead in Bremen, Germany, in 2012.[9] Colman worked with British composer Laura Mvula in 2014/15 with the Metropole Orkest,[10] performing at The Proms and the North Sea Jazz Festival. In 2016, she was commissioned to compose The Hand That Feeds, a musical about food crime with writer Mez Packer, aiming to raise public awareness of the issues and the widespread implications of food crime.[11] In autumn 2018, Colman released her third and most celebrated[12] album to date, What We're Made Of, with the independent British label Stoney Lane Records, featuring the Carducci String Quartet, alongside tour dates at Symphony Hall, Birmingham, Kings Place London and the Manchester Jazz Festival, with airplay on BBC Radio 3 and Jazz FM (UK). She was supported by Arts Council England.[13] In November 2018, it was announced that Colman had been invited to compose a piece of music in honour of Afghan activist Sakena Yacoobi as part of the The Canales Project Hear Her Song.[14] Colman has worked with many high profile artists, including Laura Mvula, Liane Carroll, Jacqui Dankworth, Claire Martin (singer), Jenny Agutter, Josie Lawrence, John Nettles and David Troughton .[15][16] She cites an eclectic range of musical influences, including Joni Mitchell, Paul Simon and Walter Becker.[17][18] EducatorAn experienced teacher, vocal and songwriting coach, Colman has given workshops and masterclasses at various festivals and summer schools across Europe.[19] She teaches Jazz Vocals at Royal Birmingham Conservatoire[20] and Guildhall School of Music and Drama,[21] London, along with leading the annual Jazzlines Summer School at Symphony Hall, Birmingham[22].
