Sarah Contos (born in 1978, Perth) is an Australian contemporary artist. She is most well known for her soft sculpture and large scale quilts that incorporate imagery from pop culture with bright colours.[1] Contos is often referred to as a feminist artist.[2] Sarah Contos has been represented by Roslyn Oxley9 Gallery, Sydney since 2014.

In 2018 Sarah Contos presents a major commissioned work Nikola Tesla sends Theda Bara To Mars as part of the Balnaves Contemporary Intervention Series at the Main Foyer of the National Gallery of Australia, Canberra.[3]

Contos has held solo exhibitions at the Australian Experimental Arts Foundation, Adelaide (2016); Heide Museum of Modern Art Project Space as part of Future Primitive, Melbourne (2013), MOP Projects, Sydney (2012/ 2010); and Firstdraft Gallery, Sydney (2009).

Group Exhibitions

Notable group shows include Conscious Process, Art Bank Gallery, Sydney (2018); Let’s Talk About Text, Artbank Gallery, Sydney (2017); Let’s Dance, Arts Projects Australia, Victoria (2017); The Great Strike 1917, Carriageworks, Sydney (2017); 21st Century Heide, Heide Museum of Modern Art, Melbourne (2015); Contemporary Print Culture, National Gallery of Australia, Canberra (2017); Haze, 4A Centre of Contemporary Asian Art, Sydney (2014); Redlands Konica Minolta Art Prize, National Art School, Sydney (2014); and The Social, Campbelltown Arts Centre, Sydney (2013).

Awards

In 2017 Contos won the inaugural Ramsay Art Prize with her colossal quilt work titled The Long Kiss Goodbye (2016).[4][5] In 2011 she was the recipient of the Martin Bequest Traveling Scholarship.[6]

Sarah Contos has worked on the design in several different productions in Australia and world wide. They include The Babel Project, Carriageworks, Sydney (2007); Cargo, Dogtroep, Amsterdam, The Netherlands (2006); Tulips From Kabul, Dogtroep, Utrecht, The Netherlands (2005); Zastrozzi, Black Swan Theatre Company, Perth (2005); TTS: Route 65, PVI Collective, Touring Show, Australia (2005); Bed, Thin Ice Productions, PICA, Perth (2004) and Swan Song, UWA Perth International Arts Festival, Perth (2002).

Residencies

Contos' most recent residencies include the 4A Beijing Residency Program (2013); The Sydney Guild, Sydney (2013), Artspace studio residency (2012 - 2013) and the Queen Street Residency, Sydney (2010).

Collections

Contos' art works are included in the collections of Heide Museum of Modern Art, Melbourne; National Gallery of Australia, Canberra; Art Gallery of South Australia, Adelaide; Private collections in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth; Ararat Regional Art Gallery, Victoria and Artbank, Sydney.
