}}Satellite Young is a Japanese Synthwave group from consisting of Emi Kusano (vocals, production), Bellemaison Sekine (production) and Tele Hideo (dancer, VJ). The group’s work combines the stylings of 1980s J-pop and synthpop with modern synthwave. Their (mainly Japanese-language) lyrics tackle modern issues within the technology sphere including AI, online dating, and social media.[1]

History

In 2013, when Emi told a mutual friend she wanted to start an ’80s-themed project of some sort, she was connected to Bellemaison Sekine.[2] At that time, Emi had just quit her own startup company as a freshman in university. Visiting Silicon Valley around 2012, she was always interested in Japan’s ’80s bubble culture, and she thought the tech world was similar[2]. The two decided to form a group and named the project ‘’Satellite Young’. Emi and Bellemaison randomly selected words that would “sound both retro and futuristic at the same time”.[3]

Satellite Young’s first single, “Jack Doushi,” was inspired by Emi receiving a friend request on Facebook from someone masquerading as Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey.[2]

In 2015 Tele Hideo joined the group as a “multi-faceted performer and visual artist who wears a TV on his head”[4]. The group contributed the song "Dividual Heart" to a Future City Records EP[5].

In January 2016, the group wrote the theme song for Swedish anime [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f_1rbcjevPA Senpai Club]. The song, “Don’t Graduate Senpai,” taps into the show’s vibe of “kawaii” — the cuteness quality in the realm of Japanese culture — and pairs that with the show’s scholastic themes (a “senpai” is an older student). In the same year, the group released their single “Sniper Rouge” with synth-wave pioneer Mitch Murder.[4]

In March 2017, the group released their first album “Satellite Young (Self-titled)” and performed at South by SouthWest.[3]

In March 2018, an animated pilot was released in collaboration with “Senpai Club” co-creator Eric Bradford.[6]

In November 2018, their single “Moment In Slow motion” became the advertising campaign song for Adobe Premiere Rush. Emi appeared in the commercial.[7]

Artistry

Emi was born in 1990 but says her childhood was dominated by ’80s pop culture. While her friends were off listening to sleek J-pop, she was at the library discovering early Seiko Matsuda, Kylie Minogue and Madonna.[8]

Sekine was born in the early ’80s, he experienced the decade’s culture first-hand. He started creating music as a kid via the video game “Dezaemon,” before moving onto working with computers and synthesizers. Although he says he was more interested in experimental scenes growing up, he says he still kept up with what Japanese pop stars were doing.[2]

Sekine got into stuff like German new age band Cusco, Journey, and, at his father’s request, Jan Hammer. He also pointed to a 1985 LP called “The 9th Wave” by J-Pop star Seiko Matsuda, referring to it as a “monumental” influence on Japanese synthwave.[4]

Emi’s lyrics are mainly about the collision between technology and humans. For example, “Fake Memory” is about artificial memories created through information found online.[2]Modern Romance” is inspired by the book of the same title by Aziz Ansari about the online dating phenomenon.[9]
