He emigrated to the States in 1978 with his American wife Susan especially to work on the streets of Manhattan and create art from his experience of living in NYC. Studio in Astoria Queens He created a completely new style of painting as wholly original as his friend and contemporary Keith Haring whose house he visited in St Marks Place. In this house he drew babies crawling up around the door jams. Up to this point all his works were on paper. In 19.. Sax returned to Cornwall with the express idea of finding an isolated studio and working with oil on canvas. He found the Birch studio in the Lamorna Valley which been converted from a stable by Lamorna Birch in the 1940s and had been neglected for years here he set to work. Sax set to work here in isolation for 7 years. It was here that Sax first started working in oil and honing his skills. To this day Sax Berlin mixes all his own original pigments using the finest materials. When finishing the Manhattan pieces and floundering for a new style Picasso came to Sax in a dream and showed him how to paint with his whole body. Not having studied Picasso up to this point but the dream effected him so much it lead Sax to invent the technique of 'skimming' with a palette knife slowly building up the overlapping colourful layers. In 1994 he became obsessed with painting Buddhist icons creating beautiful pieces using the traditional Tibetan cannon of proportions but with the invention of modern techniques and a contemporary style. But by the years end he felt that he had unfinished business with his High Classical collection so began the culturing of different styles concurrently. Exhibitions
