The School of Health and Related Research (ScHARR) is a department within the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health at The University of Sheffield in Sheffield, England. ScHARR was established in 1994 and aims to provide excellence in research and teaching for health-related areas. Led by Professor John Brazier, the school is ranked 4th in the UK for the power of health research[1]

The school is divided into four sections, each specialising in research in the fields of Design, Trials and Statistics, Health Economics and Decision Science, Health Services Research and Public Health.

History

ScHARR was established in 1994 and brought together a group of academics led by Professor Ron Akehurst. It focused on the areas health economics and health service research. ScHARR expanded rapidly into the areas of public health, statistics, decision science, health informatics, clinical trials, primary care research, psychotherapy and mental health.

Building

ScHARR is located in Regent Court, a distinctive contrasting coloured brick-built four storey building using a traditional quadrangle design, which was completed in 1993. The building is shared with other university departments, including Computer Science and the Information School. It is located close to Sheffield city centre and sits between Regent Street and Portobello and is opposite the impressive St George’s Church. There are many important historical connections to the site and Samuel Plimsoll, for example, who invented the Plimsoll line marking on boat hulls and saving many maritime lives, lived in a small property on Regent Street.

Regent Court was built on the site of the former Western Works buildings. In the 1980s, this would also come to be an important practice and recording venue for many musicians, including bands including Cabaret Voltaire and New Order. Regent Court contains the Pemberton lecture theatre, named after the epidemiologist, Professor John Pemberton[2], who worked at the University of Sheffield in the 1940s and 1950s.

Degree programmes

ScHARR offers a wide range of masters programmes and PhD study. Courses are delivered both face-to-face in Sheffield, and online (distance-learning). The School also offers access to free online courses.

Awards

ScHARR was awarded a Silver Athena SWAN award in 2014 reflecting its sustained efforts to support women in academia. This was successfully renewed in 2017.

In 2015, the former Dean of the School, Professor Jon Nicholl was awarded a CBE [3]for his outstanding contribution to health research.
