Scott Garvie is the Senior Vice President of Business and Legal Affairs of Canadian Film and Television production company Shaftesbury Films Inc.[1] Currently, he is the Chair of the Canadian Media Producers Association where he has served on the board for over 15 years.[2] EducationGarvie is a graduate of Oakville Trafalgar High School in the Halton District School Board. For Gravie's undergrad degree he attended the University of Toronto where he took Canadian History, Political Science, English, and Criminology. After undergrad he attended University of Toronto Law School from 1980-1984 and graduated with an LLB in 1984. CareerEarly CareerGarvie started his career on Bay Street before moving to a big firm in Vancouver. During this time he did securities, transactions, corporate transactions, and litigation. This is where he met Christina Jennings who is the founder of the Shaftesbury ProductionsAs the Senior Vice President, Garvie has been executive producer on all Shafestbury productions since it's founding including Shaftesbury's longest running series Murdoch Mysteries (2008-present). Garvie has been a key player in the development, financing, sales, and negotiations of all Shaftesbury productions.[3] Since joining Shaftesbury, Garvie has been instrumental in growing the company. Garvie has overseen the development and implementation of many new products including Virtual Reality experiences, mobile apps, digital content, social media channels, and branded content.[4] In 2008, Garvie was involved in Shaftesbury's acquisition of the digital studio Smokebomb entertainment. On June 11th, 2016 Scott Garvie began his tenure as chair of the CMPA.[5] Garvie was reelected as chair of the CMPA in 2017 and again for the 2018-2019 fiscal year.[6] Following Garvie reelection as chair of the CMPA Garvie expressed his mandate by stating that “There are a number of important issues we must address as an industry, including the federal government’s review of the Broadcasting and Telecommunications Acts, and I am confident we have the right team in place to create a bright future for independently-produced Canadian content.”[7] The President and CEO of CMPA Reyonlds Mastin added his words of confidence for Garvie by “Scott has been a steady hand at the wheel during a period of tremendous change in our industry. I look forward to continuing to work with him and our entire board, on behalf of producers across Canada, to ensure great content continues to get made and reaches audiences at home and around the world.”[8] Since becoming Chair of the CMPA the association has introduced the Bob Crowe Mentorship for Emerging Indigenous Producers.[9] Garvie serves on the Film Ontario Board where he has been a board member since 2011. He is also a former chair of the Ontario Producer's Panel and was on the board of the Canadian Television Fund from 2006-2010 before it was renamed the Canadian Media Fund.[10] Speaker AppearancesGarvie was one of the program faculty session leaders for The Osgoode Certificate in Entertainment Law in 2018. Awards and AccoladesIn February of 2017 PS Production Services awarded Garvie the Douglas James Dales Industry Builder Award for his contributions to the Canadian Industry as an outstanding producer.[11] Garvie has won the Donald Brittain Award for Best Social/Political Documentary Program for About Her (2008), the Best Biography or Arts Documentary Program or Series for Unsung: Behind the Glee (2013) at the Canadian Screen Awards. He also won the TV Drama award at the Golden Screen Award for his role as Executive Producer on Murdoch Mysteries. His role in Murdoch Mysteries also gained him a 2012 Monte-Carlo TV Festival nomination as well as a 2008 Gemini nomination. He won gemini awards in 2002, 2009, and 2010. As an executive producer on other television show and films he has received two Canadian Screen Award nominations, one Daytime Emmy nomination, and eight Gemini nominations.[12] Filmography
