Sean Hoyle (born 18th of December 1964) is the President of the National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers (RMT), a British trade union.

Early life

Sean Hoyle joined Wightlink (formally British Rail "sealink") in 1990 as a docker and became a local union representative. He originates from Portsmouth.

Career

He became a docker for Sealink in 1990, and was eventually elected as a local union representative, chairman of the Portsmouth branch and President of the Wessex region between 2011 and 2013. He was elected as President of the RMT in 2015 to serve as the successor of Peter Pinkney whose term ended in December 2015, in the aftermath of Bob Crow's death. He has been identified as a continuator of Crow's radical and militant policies.

He was elected having said that he is “committed to Grassroots democracy. The RMT is your union and I guarantee your voice will be heard and your decisions carried out.”

As one of the national leaders of the RMT he voiced support for the United Kingdom leaving the European Union and has taken a very active role in supporting and organising many strikes led by the RMT under his presidency, sparking some controversy, much in the same manner as Bob Crow. Sean Hoyle took office as the big strikes organised by the guards of the Southern rail franchise began, and he is regularly seen on picket lines organised by the RMT in the dozens of industrial disputes it has called for, be it within the railway franchises but also railway subcontractors such as the GTR cleaners strike.

Sean Hoyle defines himself as an internationalist socialist and regularly represents the RMT in international trade union activites across the globe, where he has contributed to the establishment of links between the RMT and other militant trade unions across the globe. He regularly attends and speaks at trade union meetings across the different continents to further the voice of the RMT amongst the international trade union movement.

Sean Hoyle regularly speaks on behalf of the RMT in different trade union and political meetings of different organisations to highlight the ongoing industrial disputes the RMT is engaging in.

Sean Hoyle, along with Steve Hedley, the assistant general secretary of the RMT, has been regularly criticized by the Conservative Party and some conservative media for "plotting to overthrow the government" because of his staunch defence of the RMT rulebook that states that one of the long term objectives of the RMT is to defend "a socialistic order of society".

Sean Hoyle is a long time supporter of Jeremy Corbyn.
