{{DISPLAYTITLE:Sean Van Vleet (songwriter)}}Sean Van Vleet (born December 12, 1982) is an American singer-songwriter and musician based out of Los Angeles, CA. He is the main collaborator for the experimental indie pop group NVDES, and former writer and lead singer for the indie rock band Empires.[1] [2]

Van Vleet has had more than 70 song placements in film/television, promos, and advertisements. His songs have been featured in newer shows such as The Bold Type, The Brave, The Good Doctor, and Marvel's Inhumans, as well as more established shows such as Lucifer, Grey's Anatomy, Shameless, Empire, and The Vampire Diaries. Van Vleet has had his music featured in the series premieres of Dynasty and 24: Legacy.

In 2015, his cover of "Break On Through (To the Other Side)" with Josh Mobley was featured in the official trailer for Victor Frankenstein.

Van Vleet's songs have found success in ads as well, landing big campaigns with Apple, Macy's, Oakley, PacSun, New Balance, Volkswagen, Victoria's Secret, and PrettyLittleThing.

"Walk Out On Me" by Courtney Love has been featured on the Empire soundtrack, Original Soundtrack from Season 1. The album was released through Columbia Records and has become a commercial success. In its first week, the album reached number one on the Billboard 200 with 130,00 album-equivalent units.[3] It was also the first TV soundtrack to top the R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. [4] The album was certified Gold in the United States in January 2016. [5] Additionally, the album was nominated for a Grammy Award in 2016. [6]

Career

Empires

Empires was formed in early 2008 when longtime friend and guitarist Tom Conrad approached Van Vleet about writing music together.[7] Conrad and Van Vleet spent the year writing music, and Max Steger, Ryan Luciani and Al Smith, soon joined the band.[8] The band's name, "Empires", was thought of by Conrad and Van Vleet at the same time, albeit on opposite sides of Chicago (Tom was on the 'L' Train at the time, while Sean was at their shared apartment).

Music from Empires has been featured on the hit television show The Vampire Diaries.

On August 23rd, 2017, Van Vleet confirmed in an Instagram comment that the band was no longer making music.[9]

NVDES

NVDES is an experimental indie pop, indietronica, and electropop project created in 2015 and based in Los Angeles, California. It is a "laptop punk" indie collective started by songwriter and producer Josh Ocean.[10] Van Vleet is Ocean's main collaborator, under the nickname Lemongirl. [11] They have been featured on 20+ New Music Friday playlists on Spotify for various singles, and have over 20 million combined streams on Spotify and Apple Music. In January 2018, they were added to Zane Lowe's #Breaking List.[12]

In 2017, they co-headlined a North American tour with Pierce Fulton, and provided main support for the Rac Ego US National Tour.[13] [14]

In 2018, two NVDES songs written by Van Vleet were featured in Apple ad campaigns. "D.Y.T. (Do Your Thing) (Feat. REMMI)" was featured in the "A New Light" campaign for the iPhone X, and "All Eyes On Us (Ooh La La)" was featured in the "Back To School" Digital Ad Campaign.[15]

NVDES has been featured in various television shows including Grey's Anatomy, Lucifer, and Shameless.

Their debut album, Vibe City Utah, will be released in the fall of 2018 via AWAL Records.
