The Seniors’ College Association of Nova Scotia (SCANS) is a registered non-profit volunteer-based organization administratively-based in Halifax (Nova Scotia, Canada). SCANS provides affordable non-credit academic courses to persons over 50 years old who join the association as members. The college offers courses on selected topics in diverse fields that have included anthropology, architecture, art appreciation, astronomy, biology, computer science, conservation, drama, ecology, economics, ethics, films, geology, history, law, literature, microbiology, music, ocean science, philosophy, religion, statistics, sociology, writing, and many others. HistorySCANS was organized in 2007 following a recommendation of the Association of Dalhousie Retirees and Pensioners (ADRP) to establish a college for senior persons in Halifax modelled on the Seniors College of the University of Prince Edward Island. Although the organization had not yet been formally constituted in 2007, four inaugural courses were offered in September of that year: “Islam, Peace, and Terrorism” by Jamal Badawi (Saint Mary's Univeristy), “Writing for Life” by Jack Potter, “Managing Your Money” by Alasdair Sinclair (Dalhousie University), and “Interpreting the King James Bible as Literature” by Harry Whittier (Dalhousie University). Following the adoption of a constitution by the membership in November 2007, SCANS became an officially registered society in January 2008. [1]In the following years, satellite chapters were established outside Halifax: Mahone Bay (September 2010), Truro (January 2011), Liverpool (2013), and Chester (2013). Thereafter, SCANS experienced strong enrolment growth. [2]In 2018, SCANS had more than 700 members and collectively offered more than 60 courses presented over three academic terms distributed throughout the central region and the satellite chapters.
