Sepp Kipfstuhl (born 10.06.1952 in Frettenshofen as Joseph Kipfstuhl) is a German meteorologist and glaciologist. He was part of the first scientific team from West Germany overwintering in Antarctica and contributed significantly to the understanding of snow, firn and ice.

Born in Bavaria as the oldest of four children, he went to school in Sondersfeld and in Eichstätt, and attended the Ludwig-Maximilians-University München, where he studied meteorology. In 1981, soon after his graduation, he joined the newly founded Alfred-Wegener-Institute for Polar Research in Bremerhaven (Germany) in an expedition to Antarctica. As part of the first scientific overwintering team, he spent 15 months at the German Georg-von-Neumayer research station, inaugurated in 1980 on the Ekstrom ice shelf. He later completed his doctoral studies, On the formation of underwater ice and the growth and energy budget of the sea ice in Atka Bay, Antarctica,[1] at the Alfred-Wegener-Institute in Bremerhaven and received his degree from the University of Bremen in 1990.

Driven by his curiosity and passion for the understanding of ice structure and properties,{{cn}} he spent his professional life at the Alfred-Wegener-Institute, focusing mainly on the studies of polar ice cores as a unique climate archive.[2] His interests are small-scale physical processes in ice and their implications for larger scales. He developed methods, procedures and processing routines for high-quality, rapid and affordable measurements of ice physical properties.[3][4] Kipfstuhl participated in more than 32 national and international expeditions to the polar regions, and was involved in the drilling and analysis of numerous ice cores. Prominent among them are the deep ice core drillings in Greenland and Antarctica as GRIP, NGRIP, EPICA, NEEM and EastGRIP. He has appeared in several TV productions[5] and interviews for newspapers and magazines.[6][7][8] Kipfstuhl is known among his colleagues as a very dedicated and experienced scientist and valued for his lively critical spirit.{{cn}}
