Shaun Richman is an American socialist, union organizer and writer. He was an activist in the Socialist Party USA from 1996 until 2007. He served as a Vice Chairperson, as Secretary-Treasurer of the Young People's Socialist League and as the campaign manager of the party's 2000 presidential campaign of David McReynolds. He quit the party in 2007, complaining of "ridiculous posturing and aggressive factionalism[1]."

From 2010 until 2015, he was a Deputy Director of Organizing for the American Federation of Teachers, where he ran the union’s national charter school organizing division[2] In that role, he was a key player in the political fight over whether charter schools should be legally considered public schools or private sector employers[3]. When the National Labor Relations Board ruled that charter schools are private sector corporations subject to its jurisdiction, Richman was quoted in the American Prospect, noting “There are very critical errors in the way the laws are designed. They decided to make these things be nonprofit corporations, and almost all the problems with charter schools flow from that essential, unnecessary decision. You want a school with autonomy over its pedagogy and hiring? There's no reason to make it a separate corporation.[4]

In 2012, Richman was the subject of a coordinated political attack by Breitbart and Fox News[5]. The attack, which culminated in a report by Tucker Carlson on Fox & Friends, blasted the American Federation of Teachers for employing a known socialist. It also cited a statement Richman made as a Socialist Party leader in October 2001, expressing skepticism over Osama bin Laden's role in the 9-11 terrorist attacks in the course of opposing the start of the U.S. war in Afghanistan. The author of the Breitbart report cynically exploited the fact that the website in which Richman was originally quoted automatically updated the purported publication date to July 7, 2008 during a reboot, allowing Fox News to falsely portray Richman as a "9-11 Truther.[6]"

In 2017, Richman published a white paper for the Century Foundation, called "Labor's Bill of Rights[7]." In it, he argued that unions should wage a series of constitutional challenges to the unequal treatment of workers' rights and corporations' under the law. The New Republic covered the proposal, with some commentary from "longtime observers of the labor movement.[8]" Venerated strategist Stephen Lerner, architect of the Justice for Janitors campaign, agreed, “There has to be a willingness to break the law as a way to highlight injustices."

Richman's writing on workers' rights and union strategy have been published in The American Prospect[9], In These Times[10], Jacobin[11], The New York Daily News, the New York Times[12], the Staten Island Advance[13], the Washington Post[14] and Vox[15].

Richman is Program Director of the Harry Van Arsdale Jr. Center for Labor Studies at SUNY Empire State College[16]
