OverviewShelley Washington is an American composer, music educator, and saxophone player from Kansas City, MO. Washington is currently enrolled in the PhD program in Music Composition at Princeton University[1] She holds degrees from Truman State University and [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_York_University/ New York University]. She is a founding member of Kinds of Kings, [2] an all-female composer collective. In addition to this collective, Washington is also one of the featured composers for the 2018 Solo Saxophone Commissioning Consortium.[3] Musical StyleMs. Washinton's music has been said to "explore intricate rhythms to encourage a sort of layered listening through grooves, melody and harmony."[4] Much of her music is influenced by contemporary social issues. Washington says that she wants to write music that "confronts known social injustices... and create[s] a space for public dialogue...." [5] The composer was in the national spotlight during the summer of 2018 because of comments she made on Twitter regarding sexist comments toward female composers.[6] As a result, she was banned from the service for a 24-hour period.
