Jeffrey Shrader is the Sheriff of Jefferson County, Colorado, heading up the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office (JCSO) based in Golden, Colorado.

Background

Jeffrey Shrader was raised in Colorado and began his career in law enforcement 33 years ago. Originally Sheriff Shrader began as a deputy, assigned to the Jefferson County Jail. Prior to being elected Sheriff, Jeff Shrader oversaw operations as chief of the four major divisions of the JCSO. He was elected to the position of Sheriff in 2014.^[1]

Accomplishments & Initiatives

Safety in Faith Summit

In August of 2015 Sheriff Jeff Shrader introduced the first Safety in Faith Summit.^[2] The summit was organized to be an opportunity for law enforcement and local faith leaders to come together and communicate about increasing safety in houses of worship. The summit has become an annual event, hosted every year by Sheriff Shrader with various guest speakers participating.

Jeffcom 991 consolidation

Jeffcom 911 is the singular emergency dispatch system for Jefferson County and is the culmination of years of planning and collaboration between eight agencies^[3] including the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, led by Sheriff Shrader. Jeffcom 911 was proposed as a savings of time and money as well as a higher level of response for citizens. Emergency calls would be routed to a singular response center that can handle all emergencies, rather than to the resident’s city police then away to additional dispatch lines if necessary.^[4]

CHEEZO

The Child Sex Offender Internet Investigations Unit (CHEEZO) was originally housed under the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office, but was disbanded due to conflict between the unit’s investigation techniques and Colorado law for lawyer conduct.^[5] The CHEEZO unit played a large role in child online safety aiding in 920 arrests (at time of publication)^[6] and engaging the community in online safety education; because of this in February of 2017 CHEEZO was shifted to operate under the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office^[7] in order for the unit to continue their work with legal standing.

School safety

For the 2018-2019 school year Sheriff Shrader allocated an addition four deputies to serve as school resource officers in Jefferson County Public Schools.^[8] The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office is one of seven law enforcement agencies in Jefferson County that assign school resource officers. The addition brings the contribution from the Sheriff’s Office from 10 deputies to 14 rotating between high schools and middle schools.^[9]
