Sneed was born and raised in Oklahoma City. His parents were Retta and Walter G. Sneed. He graduated from Douglas High School (Oklahoma City) in 1938. He studied at Dillard University in New Orleans and then Langston University in Oklahoma. he playes football, served in the U.S.O. entetaining troops, and then joined a choral ensemble. He married Frieda Roye. Sneed moved to Cleveland and then in 1952 to Brooklyn.
