SMETHOD is an initiative of the European Union's [https://ec.europa.eu/programmes/horizon2020/en Horizon 2020] Research and Innovation Programme to better understand how policy can direct appropriate support to companies to better achieve the twin goals of European economic and social prosperity.

EU policy suggests that small and medium-sized enterprises ([https://ec.europa.eu/growth/smes/business-friendly-environment/sme-definition_en SMEs]) make a major contribution to the European economy ^[1]. Supported within the H2020-INNOSUP line, [https://cordis.europa.eu/project/rcn/212954/factsheet/en%20project%20summary SMETHOD] sets out policy recommendations on:

• what key factors can account for European SME performance?
• which factors define the companies that have the highest potential for innovation?
• which companies would benefit most from which types of support (grants, tax credits and vouchers etc.)?

The recommendations are integrated in an improved methodology to segment SMEs based on sector, life-cycle, stage of innovation cycle and socio-cultural factors. https://cordis.europa.eu/programme/rcn/664231/en.
