Smile Internet Group is an Internet company headquartered in Gurugram, Haryana, India. This privately held group of internet ventures acts as a business building platform for national and international projects.[1][2][3][4]

History

Smile Group started as a web technology company, Smile Multimedia (P) Ltd, in 1999. The company was founded by Harish Bahl and CP Singh and was later joined by Manish Vij, partnered as a co-founder in 2005.

In the year 2005, Smile Group founded their first company named Quasar, which was later acquired by WPP. Since then the company has built numerous companies primarily based in the digital media, marketing SaaS, consumer internet and gaming sector.

Venture Studio

As a startup incubator, Smile Group has launched several businesses and partnered with companies like WPP, Airbnb, Yahoo.

  • Quasar: Launched in the year 2005, Quasar is a digital media company which is now a part of GroupM. In 2008, WPP Digital acquired 75% stake in Quasar[5] marking the first major investment in independent digital media agency market in India by a global ad network.
  • SVG Media: A joint venture between Smile Group and Vun Network, SVG Media acquired DGM, SeventyNine, and Komli. Dentsu Aegis Network acquired the company in 2017..[6]
  • Tyroo: Smile Group incubated Tyroo in 2006. Tyroo provides tools to brands, app developers, media companies, and OEMs for the creation of high-engagement vertical videos. In 2007, Yahoo! acquired a 35% stake in the firm.[7] Yahoo's stake was bought by growth stage venture capital firm Xplorer Capital in 2011.[8] In 2018, Snapchat appointed Tyroo to expand its advertising business in India.[9]
  • Fashion & You: A fashion and lifestyle flash sales e-commerce platform was founded in 2010 as a joint venture between Smile Group and Goldsquare Sales India Private Ltd. In 2010, they secured $8 million in funding from Sequoia Capital India.[10] In 2011, they further raised $40 million from Norwest Venture Partners and Intel Capital.[11] Their latest round of funding was $10 million from Sequoia Capital, Norwest Venture Partners, Intel Capital and Nokia Growth Partners in 2014.[12]
  • Katalyzers is a business building platform launched by Smile Group. It is a $100 million joint venture with TPG Growth, the growth equity investment arm of TPG Capital, San Francisco-based private investment firm.[13] Smile group partnered with Airbnb, which is an online marketplace and hospitality service for people to lease or rent short-term lodging. It helped Airbnb to internationalise their business operations.[14][15] Smile group also partnered with Scangroup[16] and Neo@Ogilvy[17] for building new ventures.
  • Smile group has its holding in many startups, like: Rapido, Gaming Monk, ScoopWhoop, LetsBuy.com, LittleEyeLabs, Yumlane, The Man Company, etc.

Controversies

Some of the e-commerce ventures like FashionandYou did not do well.[18] It faced certain challenges when some of the top management quit. It lost to well capitalised competitors like: Myntra and Jabong.[19]
