The Snawfus is a mythical creature from the Ozarks region of the Southern United States, said to live in the forests. It was first brought into popular awareness outside of the Ozarks by Vance Rudolph, a folklorist specializing in the culture of the region, which includes part of Missouri, Arkansas, and Oklahoma.

Characteristics

The Snawfus is often regarded as a kind of spirit animal, but takes on the form of a Mythological deer distinguished in its appearance from ordinary deer by its white fur. In some legends, the Snawfus is said to have wings. Some describe its wings, as well as its antlers, as sprouting leaves and blossoms, usually those of the dogwood tree. Some sources say that the Snawfus has the ability to remain unseen by human beings by always being behind its would-be observers, no matter which direction they look.[1]

The Snawfus is also said to have the ability to leap or fly from the ground into the treetops, and to perch there comfortably in spite of its hoofed feet. The creature is said to breathe out the blue mists that are common in the Ozarks, particularly in the autumn.[2]
