Sofronije Podgoričanin (Podgorica, Montenegro, 1668 - Sremska Mitrovica, Habsburg Monarchy, 7 January 1711) was the Metropolitan of Krušedol (Karlovci) who succeeded Metropolitan Isaija Đaković in 1708. Sofronije also held a short term, from 1710 to 1711, though he continued to be the Patriarchate of Peć's exarch in the Habsburg Monarchy despite threats made against him by the authorities.[1] Metropolitan Sofronije, originally came to Peć from Podgorica, hence the name Podgoričanin. As a youngster, he settled in the Patriarchate of Peć where he was tonsured and educated. In 1694 when Bishop Jovan of Papraća Monastery died, Patriarch Arsenije III named archimandrite Sofronije as administrator of the Eparchy of Papraća.[2] The Great Migrations of the Serbs under the leadership of Patriarch Arsenije III Čarnojević brought about considerable changes in the life of Old Slavonia. Patriarch Arsenije III started to visit the areas and spiritual centers of the Serbian people, who suffered because of the proselytism of the Eastern Catholic churches. The Patriarch appointed one of his more capable bishops, Sofronije Podgoričanin as Bishop of Pakrac-Slavonia on 17 May 1705 in the Krušedol Monastery, and through that act confirmed the continuity of Orthodoxy in those areas. The Austrian Habsburgs tried many times to pressure Sofronije to break his ties with the Patriarchate of Peć but to no avail. On 23 April 1710, he was elected Metropolitan of the Metropolitanate of Krušedol, but soon died, in Sremski Karlovci on 7 January 1711 at the age of 43. He was buried in the Cathedral of St. Nicholas at Sremski Karlovci.[1] Like his two predecessors, Metropolitan Sofronije rendered invaluable services to the Serbian Orthodox Church and the people. It was Bishop Atanasije Ljubojević (1622-1712) who assumed administrative responsibilities of the Metropolitanate of Krušedol (Karlovci)[3] until the election of Vikentije Popović-Hadžilavić in 1713. Atanasije Ljubojević witnessed the sudden death of two church leaders in Krušedol, Isaija Đaković and his own designated successor, Sofronije Podgoričanin, and as fate would have it, in mid-December of 1712 at the age of almost 90 Atanasije, too, passed away.
