Amongst other roles, she is most recognised for starring as Mel Maguire in the ITV soap opera Coronation Street.[1]

Early Life

Sonia Ibrahim was born in Burnley to Restaurant owners Benjamin Ibrahim and Pamela Ibrahim[2]. She is mixed race Egyptian (from her father) and English (from her mother). As a child, Sonia attended St Hilda's Catholic High School for girls and college at Bacup and Rawtenstall Grammar.[2] Following this, she studied Contemporary Performance at Leeds University[2] before moving to New York to finish her studies at the New York Film Academy.[3]

Career

Coronation Street

Sonia Ibrahim made her Coronation Street debut as Mel Maguire in 2016[4][5]. There, she worked closely with Lucy Fallon, Christopher Harper and the Platt family throughout the controversial Bethany Platt grooming storyline which continued on until 2018[6]. Mel Maguire was introduced as the assistant to Nathan Curtis (played by Christopher Harper) and worked at his Beauty Salon. Through the storyline, Mel was portrayed as a "bad girl" character who befriended Bethany Platt (played by Lucy Fallon) in order to assist her being groomed to become a young sex worker. Towards the end of the storyline, it became clear that Mel herself was being controlled and manipulated by Nathan Curtis and she eventually helped Bethany get to court to help put Nathan in prison[7]. Mel took the opportunity to flee while Nathan was on trial and left with the help of Bethany who gave her a bank card to finance her escape[8]. Sonia's exit from the Coronation Street offered the opportunity for her character to return in the future, if ever the opportunity presents itself.

Other TV endeavours

Sonia Ibrahim played the role of Meghan Markle in the U.S. action TV series Whiskey Cavalier[9]. She also played the female lead in "Left Behind" - a short independent film by Joel Souza[10]. In 2015 Sonia presented a Road Safety Campaign by Kelly Fort, in partnership with the BBC[10]. Apart from this, she has also been involved in numerous TV commercials and corporate shoots[10].

Theatre

Sonia Ibrahim has appeared in many Theatre productions including; Macbeth (Royal Shakespeare Company)[11], When Both Sides Surrender (53 Two Theatre)[12], Our Club (JB Shorts)[13] and is due to play the lead in #BeMoreMartyn[14] - a stage show which is due to tour the UK through 2019.

Modelling

Sonia Ibrahim has completed many modelling shoots both for the fashion and wedding industries.

Personal Life

Sonia Ibrahim now lives in the city of Manchester, UK with her fiancé. She is due to be married in 2019[15]. Away from acting, Sonia spends her time helping out her family at their Restaurant in Burnley and retains close ties to the Town[16][17].
