Southdale Library

"Southdale Library" is located 7001 York Avenue South in Edina, Minnesota. It is the second county library in the city of Edina. The Southdale Library originally opened in November 1973. [1] At 60,000 square feet in are it is one of the largest libraries in the Hennepin County Library system. The building is part of a large complex that also houses district courts. [2] Currently the Library offers materials in Chinese, Russian, Somali, Spanish and Vitenamese in their language collection. [3]

When the library opened it was the third largest public library in Minnesota with a 200,000 volume collection. In addition to their large collection, Southdale opened with audio-visual materials including computers, televisions, recorders, projectors, video tape equipment and the ability to connect to six-channel copper loops to listen to audio materials via headphones. [4]

At the time it was built, the library was among one of the Hennepin County libraries funded by Hennepin County after State Legislature authorized the county’s long-range building program in 1969. This legislation was a 15-year building program costing $20 million some of which helped fund the Library. [5] The library also served as the headquarters of Hennepin County Library until Ridgedale Library was built in 1982.

Southdale Library will be replaces in the next decade. The new building will include a new children’s play and learning area, better connections to the outdoors and comfortable seating with access to electricity.[6] Previous renovations were completed in several phases. The first phase was expansion of their parking lot in September to November of 1992.[7] The next phase included expanding the interior for additional square footage to the library and upgrade to the building. [8] Later the final phase was completed in January 1 to March 13, 1994.[9]

Art at the Library

“ Untitled” by Christopher Tully[10] is the one prominent piece of art featured in the Southdale Library children’s area. “Untitled is an installation of several sculptures of animals includes fishes, birds, and hippos. Christopher Tully’s sculptures are displayed throughout the children’s area of the library. Tully is a Minnesota artist that creates large scale sculptures and installation pieces of whimsical animal characters and nature scenes.[11]
