In 2018 The World Festival drew an estimated 4,000 visitors and adopted the tradition of the United Nations Art Miles Mural Project, encouraging younger guests to promote global peace by painting their own message of hope and non-violence. The dedicated resident who initially started the Festival went on to form the Multicultural Association, where they continue to actively guide the planning and development of the annual event which grows each year. Many elected officials, community-based organizations, and stakeholders of the City of Los Angeles actively support the festival, helping to develop creative and effective programs that improve and promotes cultural diversity, harmony, and peace. The Festival continues to highlight the City of Los Angeles’ vibrant and diverse community and has grown to include more than 17 countries’ musical, dance and demonstration performances on one stage. Lovers’ Rock Reggae Boat CruisePremiere Event and Promotions (PEP, Inc.) is the organizer of the annual Lovers’ Rock Boat Cruise aboard a beautiful multi-level boat in the Marina del Rey Harbor. The annual dinner and cruise provide guests with the amenities of a comfortable, modern yacht, beautifully decorated for Valentine's Day while enjoying LOVERS ROCK REGGAE by a live traditional BAND and sweet reggae tunes provided by a top of the line SELECTOR aka (DJ). Proceeds from this event go to purchase comfort toys for youth, ages 0-5, in shelters. Youth who are victims of domestic violence are often forced from their homes with nothing more than the shirts on their backs. A teddy bear (or some form of stuffed animal) offers them comfort in a foreign environment and through the transition phase as mom works to establish self-sufficiency and independence. Nonprofit Programs SupportedParties with a Purpose. Every year, a portion of the proceeds from each event goes to support the programs and projects of an IRS approved nonprofit organization. As an immigrant, Windsor Valcinus understands the value an importance of organizations that serve underrepresented, underserved communities. From 2016-2018, a portion of the Haitian Heritage Festival’s proceeds supported the programs and projects at Avalon Carver Community Center, a 501(C)(3) nonprofit and mainstay in Los Angeles, whose work in the community represents the strength, resilience, and power celebrated at the Haitian Festival. The agency provides education services, home improvement services, and substance abuse services for people who live in Los Angeles County. The community’s tax-deductible contributions make a lasting difference in the lives of disenfranchised individuals working hard to establish independence and a better quality of life. Being able to leverage the numbers from the festival to support such a worthy cause has been a priority focus for Premiere Event and Promotions (PEP, Inc.). In 2018, PEP, Inc. partnered with FeedOm and Food for Life Global to feed 20,000 youth through its collaboration on the Reggae Vegan Fest Ultimate Holiday Party. Each ticket purchase provides 10 Hungry Kids with a nutritious vegan meal. Attendees are also asked to bring non-perishable vegan food to donate to the local food bank. And a nonprofit organization accepting a donation of Evolution Diet food from company founder, Eric Weisman, for companion animals to the area's homeless. Nonprofit leaders, especially organizations that support immigrant people from the Caribbean islands, are encouraged to submit applications for consideration to become the recipient of a Haitian Heritage Festival. Besides the monetary contribution, the nonprofit organization will be featured on the website, press release, and social media promotions, providing exposure to their plight, successes, and impact in the community. The History of SoCal-Based Afro-Caribbean CelebrationsPremiere Event and Promotions (PEP, Inc.) is the organizer of the annual Haitian Festival, providing full-service, high-end production solutions utilizing a high-touch, systems-based model. Premiere delivers shows that engages audiences and exceeds expectations. Windsor Valcinus, Director of Operations for Premiere Event & Promotion Services, Inc., the festival’s founder, is best known for his long residency at the Los Angeles night Club Caribbean Disco Paradise,105 Club with DJ Capone, which has been described as the prototype of the modern Caribbean dance club. Influential post-disco DJ Francois credits DJ Wiz with introducing the Caribbean music aesthetic into dance music: Compa mix with Calypso, Son Montuno, Salsa, Meringue and Reggae. Windsor ValcinusWindsor Valcinus, better known by his stage name the famous Deh Wizard / DJ Wiz, is a Haitian Born, American Citizen. Born on the Island of Hispaniola aka HAITI in Port-Au- Prince, September 1, 1960, DJ Wiz was one of six children whose family came to United States in October 1970. He attended school in Brooklyn New York from 1971-79. DJ Wiz immigrated with his family as a ten-year-old boy to the United States, with his Mother Cleomie Veigne Valcinus, Father Augustin Valcinus, and Older Sister Michelle “ Michou” Feiner (who died on August 9, 2017), Younger Brother Augustin Valcinus II aka DJ Gusty Gee the Master MC; Younger Sister Myrlene Valcinus, Youngest Sister Marie Altagrace Valcinus, after living in Brooklyn, New York for eleven (11) years. While attending Sarah J Hale H. S. in 1974 to 1977, as the neighborhood transitioned to a predominantly Caribbean and Puerto Rican American population, Windsor excelled in History, social study and culture, leaving an impression on his teachers that he would become a Historian one day. He inherited his love for music from his father Augustin Valcinus and sister Michelle “Michou” Feiner who loved Haitian, Mexican and Cuban music. Windsor’s sister and mother would put records on so that they can dance together. Windsor used a record player at the age of 13 by changing the record as fast as possible, or put another song on cue from the eight-track or a cassette player. they moved to California on December 28, 1980. Wiz started to DJ music at block parties, house parties, and underground clubs. Windsor began to DJ as a teenager citing Reggae artist Bigga Haitian as one of his early influences, playing his music at every dance he DJ’d. Introduction to the DiasporaA DJ, disc jockey, often abbreviated as DJ, is a person performing at an event who plays existing recorded music for a live audience record turntables and a DJ mixer, a small mixer used to transition between songs. Most common types of DJs include radio DJ, club DJ who performs at a nightclub or music festival and turntablist who uses record players, usually turntables, to manipulate sounds on phonograph records. DJs often use specialized DJ mixers, small audio mixers with crossfader and cue functions to blend or transition from one song to another. Mixers are also used to pre-listen to sources of recorded music in headphones and adjust upcoming tracks to mix with currently playing music. DJs use equipment that can play at least two sources of recorded music simultaneously and mix them together to create seamless transitions between recordings and develop unique mixes of songs. Often, this involves aligning the beats of the music sources so their rhythms do not clash when played together or to enable a smooth transition from one song to another. DJ software can be used with a DJ controller device to mix audio files on a computer instead of a console mixer. DJs may also use a microphone to speak to the audience; effects units such as reverb to create sound effects and electronic musical instruments such as drum machines and synthesizers. Originally, the disc in disc jockey referred to gramophone records, but now DJ is used as an all-encompassing term to describe someone who mixes recorded music from any source, including cassettes, CDs or digital audio files or a CDJ or today laptop. The title DJ is commonly used by DJs in front of their real names or adopted pseudonyms or stage names. In 1978, Windsor became infatuated with an idea of mixing the "Music that would never stop," a concept he shared during a brief conversation with DJ All-Night who introduced Wiz to Bongo (who ran an underground basement dance culture club in Utica and Carroll street). Bongo’s brother, Mango, was the proprietor of the location, a minimally decorated, members-only dance club (uniquely situated in the basement) where punch, fruit, and soda were served in lieu of alcohol, and music was processed by a state-of-the-art sound system. According to DJ Wiz one turntable, one cassette deck and an eight-track was state-of-the-art. “Well, in my mind it was,” Wiz recalls. "You could only get into the Basement by private invitation. This was not because Bongo wanted to create an elitist environment; he intentionally wanted to bring together diverse groups of Caribbean people from different parts of the Caribbean who wouldn't ordinarily party together to create a democratic, integrated venue.” DJ Wiz was powerfully attracted to Jamaican Reggae Music, Calypso, Soca, Salsa, Soukous and R&B along with Haitian music from his country, so this Basement party was instrumental in bringing together Caribbean people from every part of the islands, and sowed the seed for what would become Windsor’s penchant for creating a gathering place for African-descended people from over a dozen countries to celebrate the Black Diaspora through music. DJ Wiz got his start alongside DJ Kojakk & DJ All-Night at the Continental Club in Brooklyn New York as a replacement for DJ Marco who briefly employed both of them as club Disc Jockeys and taught them his pioneering three turntable technique. Accordingly, DJ Marco’s style was influenced by Salsa, Disco music and upbeat rock. Meanwhile, DJ Wiz was still trying to make his way in the New York club scene. Inspired by many musical beats and the lyrics, Windsor Valcinus aka DJ Wiz was also deeply influenced by the four (4) languages he spoke: French, English, Spanish and Creole. DJ Wiz’s music had the distinct ability to take listeners around the world to places such as Jamaica, Trinidad & Tobago, Haiti, Cuba, Africa, Puerto Rico, Panama and the Americas, like he did with his mindset. For DJ Wiz, the night club was his playground Whether a fast-paced Reggae, Soca, Compa, Salsa, Zouk song or a relaxing poolside beat, there lived a hint of adventure in every song to take listeners to the various places that DJ Wiz had been too. His list of residences includes Marquee, New York City, Las Vegas, and Santa Barbara, but his music transcended geography and anything being played in most, if not all, Caribbean clubs in Los Angeles. Wiz started to DJ music at block parties, house parties, and underground clubs. After moving to California in December 29, 1980, he met Kenson Raymond, who is like a brother to him today. They have been friends since. About a month later Kenson introduced him to Wayne “Tac” Joseph and they became brothers. Kenson named the three of them T.K.W. In 1981, Wiz started working at the Sheraton Universal as a banquet waiter; saved money and put together his first sound system he called ‘NICENESS.’ DJ Wiz, the Early YearsSince the early 80’s DJ Wiz has been involved in Caribbean Music, beginning in Los Angeles with West Coast icons and pioneers Kesner Publicity DJ Joe and DJ South Man who had the first ever Carnaval in California in 1981; and promoting large dances and concerts with over 3,000 people. Music Machine for Tabou Combo, Sparrow, El Grand Combo, Calypso Rose and many more, establishing the very beginning of the Caribbean scene on the West Coast. At the time DJ Wiz was 20 Years old and they would have him DJing. Back then, DJ Wiz didn’t own any professional equipment so when he began working with Big Daddy Productions & Caribbean City Vibes, DJ Blaze from Compton had to show him how to use the huge Cerwin Vega Mixer. Sam’s Records and Barton Records would call the East Coast and have them send him all the hottest new underground records from various record stores in the city to LA. And call Wiz to pick them up. Wiz would take those records like Gregory Isaac, Dennis Brown, Culture, Burning Spear, Frankie Paul, Black Uhuru, lord invader, lord melody, Sparrow, Calypso Rose, Lord Kitchener and more and play them at events. In 1983, Wiz was asked to play at Disco Paradise, the number one Caribbean nightclub in Los Angeles on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights and also rotated with other local clubs in the Los Angeles area from 1983 to 1990. California CrewDJ Wiz was very proud to be a member of the highly publicized California Catt Crew, KPFK Public Radio and Caribbean Disco Paradise; he was in popular demand. In fact, he was booked months in advance and performed 2-4 parties every weekend. After being overbooked week after week, DJ Wiz decided to form a crew of DJs similar to his style and have them open for him or give them the gig. Then he joined Uncle Jam’s Army Playing reggae and became Reggae Cat. But they wanted everyone to have their own signature sound and scratching techniques so they formed the California Catt Crew which included Bobcat, Battle Cat, Dr. Scratch Kat, Wild Cat, Cosmic Cat, Alley Cat, Courageous Cat, and Kitty Kat. Bobcat would help book the DJs around Southern California and also give them tips about the business. Max respect goes out to Bobcat & California Catt Crew. In 1989, Wiz formed Islanders Enterprise with some friends and started promoting. From 1990-91, Wiz started Caribbean Musical Entertainment and promoted Maverick’s Flat, The Caribbean Hideaway, and Monday Night Football at The Mardi-Gras club, Continental Club, and at local Colleges and Universities. From 1992-93, Wiz promoted festivals and shows, rented out Disc Jockey equipment, and provided event planning and community work for local organizations. In 1994, Windsor met Mr. Glenford Walker AKA DJ Gee Wax. They started a sound system by the name of The Sounds of the Chronic and promoted them. Along with DJ Gee Wax, DJ Wiz experimented with echo chambers, drum machines and synthesizers in his productions and live sets, ushering in an electronic, post-disco sound that presaged the ascendance of House Parties. DJ Wiz has proven to his peers and the entire Caribbean and American Hip Hop community that he is one of the greatest Caribbean DJ of his time. Night Clubs:DJ Wiz DJ'd at Club Paradise 24 in Hollywood, Club Ménage in Pasadena, The Name of the Game, Carolina West, Club Dominico’s, Golden Sails Hotel in Long Beach, Acapulco Club in Seal beach, Light House club in Hermosa Beach, Club Flex in Hollywood, Martini Lounge in Hollywood, The Spot in Hollywood, Green Onions in West Los Angeles, Speak Easy in West Los Angeles and more. DJ Wiz Transitions to RadioAt the time, radio was traditional R&B and was playing very little reggae. DJ Wiz was the visionary and person who thought of the idea, concept, and name, "Mix shows" for Soul of Music on KWiZ. Radio DJs or radio personalities introduce and play music that is broadcast on AM, Wiz Radio stations. 1994-KWIZ used to be a radio station in Santa Ana, California, on 1480 kHz, with a sister FM station, KWIZ-FM/96.7. KWIZ operated with 5,000 directional watts day and night. KWIZ-FM was a station operating from Orange, California with 3 kW. DJ Wiz along with DJ Gee Wax produced one of the first Caribbean radio stations in the early 90’s changing the entire format in radio. They introduced and pioneered the Saturday Night Mix Show Are You on Your Way to the Club? and Sunday Rebel Music The three (3) O’clock Reggae Road Black on KWIZ The Only DJ Who Can Play Music for Everyone“DJ WIZ was the only DJ in Southern California who could play for the Trinidadians, Belizeans, Jamaicans, Haitians, Panamanians, Cubans, and the Puerto Ricans,” stated Wiz. “The idea was to have people come to you while you were playing and say ‘You are good. Would you play at my function?’ It was all about sharing my passion with people, that’s why I became a DJ--to make people dance.” A lot of producers, promoters and other DJ’s didn’t think it was cool to play what people wanted to hear; even in the studio, mixing music for radio commercials or for rappers. Wiz mixed for the people who would be listening to the commercial. He loved playing for his friends when they came over to his house and enjoyed sharing his music with people. He is someone who could move hearts and minds on the dance floor with his music—it was a balancing act. Record CompaniesWhile hanging out with DJ Gus and Bobcat Windsor was approached by Mitchell Cohen an Arista Records Executive and asked to promote Hip Hop in the Caribbean Clubs in exchange for free records, T-shirts, give-a-ways and baseball caps. He agreed and became a member. When Capitol Heard about what was being done with Arista they also approached him and wanted the same arrangement. He was also approached by a Hollywood Records Music Executive Laura Ziffren Wasserman from Deaf Jam Records, Ruthless Records and Atlantic records for a similar arrangement.
