[1] The force was headquartered at Keppel Street, South Shields, and was next door to the fire station. These buildings have been demolished and there is now a jobcentre in their place. On 1 August 1968, the River Tyne Police was merged with the South Shields Borough Police and, on the 1st October of that year became part of Durham Constabulary. In 1974, it formed part of Northumbria Police due to the Local Government Act 1972 Chief Constables
