South Wales Caving Club (SWCC) is a caving club[1] [2] based in Penwyllt which is near Abercraf and fifteen miles North of Swansea, in South Wales. The SWCC headquarters is located in the Ogof Ffynnon Ddu National Nature Reserve[3]. Directly below the SWCC headquarters lies the Ogof Ffynnon Ddu cave (OFD) and across the valley is the Dan-yr-Ogof cave, both major cave systems. Many other caves can be found in the area. South Wales Caving club was formed in 1946[4][5] and currently has around 300 members from all around the UK as well as overseas[6]. In 1946 members of the SWCC discovered the OFD 1 entrance[7] giving access to the deepest cave in the UK. In 1963 members extended the Dan-yr-Ogof cave adding another 10 miles to its length[8]. The club's primary focus is caving in South Wales but the club has frequent trips to other UK caving regions as well as expeditions worldwide[9]. The club also runs frequent weekend events to introduce potential members to caving[10] as well as social events at the headquarters for members.
