Spikning or nailing is an academic ritual in connection with the presentation of a doctoral thesis. Three weeks before the public defense, the dissertation must be published, from this point on the institution must provide the dissertation so that the person who wishes has time to read it to be able to criticize during the public defense. One copy is then nailed ceremonially by the respondent in a designated place on the institution, usually a tree, plank or bulletin board, for the general view. Nowadays, nailing takes place at certain universities electronically and during a so-called e-nailing so that it can be read by anyone interested. In connection with the nailing ceremony, reference copies of the dissertation are also distributed to the libraries that will hold them.

The tradition varies significantly between universities and even departments, but traditionally the thesis is nailed to a birch tree with hand forged nails. This stems from the occasion when Martin Luther nailed his 95 theses about the meaning of the indulgence at the castle church gate in Wittenberg in 1517.
