Splitgate: Arena Warfare is a first-person shooter indie game developed by 1047 Games. Created in Unreal Engine, the PC game formally known as Wormhole Wars redefines arena-shooter mechanics by giving each player a portal gun.[1] Similar to traditional arena-shooters, each player's loadout consists of a set primary and secondary weapon. However, in addition to these starting weapons, each player also carries a portal gun, allowing them to strategically maneuver around the map. Splitgate: Arena Warfare has been described as 'Halo meets Portal,' and 'Halo plus Portal' by PC Gamer and IGN respectively. [2] [1] Splitgate: Arena Warfare is currently in closed-alpha, with an expected PC release in early 2019.

Gameplay

Environment

Splitgate: Arena Warfare exhibits a colorful and sci-fiesque art style. Boasting large neon billboards, dynamic scoreboards, and spartan-like skins, Splitgate: Arena Warfare is both sporty and futuristic. [1]

Game Modes

Currently, Splitgate: Arena Warfare features five game modes: Team Deathmatch, King of the Hill, Free for All, Domination, and Teabag Confirmed. The most latter, Teabag Confirmed, is a play on the traditional Kill Confirmed game mode popularized by the Call of Duty franchise. [3] Upon death, a literal tea bag spawns above the dead player's body. To confirm a kill, or to deny an opponent from confirming a kill, one must crouch twice on the dead body. Crouching twice is 1047 Games' definition of teabagging.

The Arena

Splitgate: Arena Warfare has released six maps; Olympus, Outpost, Pantheon, Helix, Silo, and Durado. Although Helix, Outpost, and Olympus already display Splitgate: Arena Warfare's final futuristic art style, 1047 Games plans on overhauling Silo, Durado, and Pantheon before release in 2019. Power weapons spawn in set locations around each map for players to pick up and use for battle. Power weapons include RPGs, battle rifles, SMGs, sniper rifles, plasma rifles, and shotguns.

Portal Mechanics

Each player can use their portal gun to teleport around the arena. Using the default 'Q' and 'E' buttons, players can spawn two different portals that allow for seamless travel between points on the map. Gunfire can also travel through portals, and killing an enemy in this way is considered a 'portal kill.' Splitgate: Arena Warfare has limited the surfaces in which portals can be placed, but they are easily identifiable by their uniquely-textured surfaces. [2]

Development

The idea of combining FPS mechanics with portals first originated when Ian Proulx, son of Intuit co-founder Tom Proulx, was an undergraduate at Stanford University. Ian developed the initial prototype as his undergraduate senior project for computer science. Ian teamed up with his friend and Stanford classmate, Nicholas Bagamian, to develop what is now Splitgate: Arena Warfare.[4]

Release

1047 Games plans on releasing the PC version of Splitgate: Arena Warfare in early 2019.
