Sports participation is physical and competitive activity and games aimed at improving the social and mental health of individuals. There are several positive correlations sports participation has on youth and adults. Kochar (2018) revealed these positive correlations in his research as it can lead to higher levels of self esteem and improved academic achievement. This research also found that sports participation can lead to higher life satisfaction among youth. Life satisfaction is important for the development of youth because when they participate in sports they are more likely to receive social support which then leads to higher levels of well-being. Not only does sports participation have a positive impact on social well being of individuals but it can also have a great impact on mental health. People who identify with sports can escape feelings of isolation or depression because they can find other individuals who have similar interests creating feelings belongingness. Deelen, Jansen, Dogterom, Kamphuis, and Ettema (2017) study found that sports participation is impacted by the characteristics of the social and physical environment. They found that sports participation may be prevented because of primarily location and people having access to natural spaces where they can run or walk on trails. Sports participation also depends on the number of sport facilities a person has that is close to their home because if they live far from the gym they are less likely to participate in sports. There also needs to be access to city parks since a lot of people may not be able to afford a gym membership they can rather use these public spaces to get involved in a competitive sport such as basketball or soccer. There also has to be a motivation for people to want to participate in sports. Dyakova, Dyakov, and Angelova (2017) found out in their study that students in particular were interested in participating in football because they received positive emotions and room to improve their physical fitness. The social support people get from participating in sports is a good feeling especially if the team wins. The positive impact on the social health sports participation has on youth is good to maintain a certain body image. A young persons identity is especially significant to them because in a time of development people may only be concerned about staying fit and even though they do nit have any general interest in the sport.
