Summary

The Sports Technology Awards Group is an international executive-level sports technology awards event, its ceremony taking place yearly every May. Founded in 2014, it was the first event of its kind, and aimed to be the biggest celebration of innovative technology in the sport sector.

The Sports Technology Awards Group’s remit is to ‘inform, inspire and celebrate’ all aspects of tech-led innovation in sports..[1] The Group’s adjudicating process also seeks to be as transparent as possible, industry figures and international athletes participating in third-party judging separate from the influence of event organizers.

Every Group initiative looks to showcase excellence and recognize visionary figures within the sports sector. 2019 will be the sixth cycle of the ceremony.

The Yahoo Sports Technology Awards

The Sports Technology Awards is the main initiative of the Group, and is currently known as the Yahoo Sports Technology Awards, due to Yahoo Sports’ Headline Sponsorship of the event between 2018 and 2019[2].

The Yahoo Sports Technology Awards is an annual awards presentation for outstanding advances in sports technology. Awarded by the Sports Technology Awards Group and judged by influencers from the world of sport, these awards recognize excellence in the sports industry. There are six brands shortlisted for every category, with one outright winner being awarded the Trophy in each. The Awards were first held in 2014, and attracts entries from all over the world across many different sports[3].

The Yahoo Sports Technology Awards current and previous judges span C-Suite executives to Olympic and Paralympic champions. The list includes Kelly Sotherton, Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson, Michael Lynagh, Isa Guha, Ben Ryan, and Louis Saha[4].

The ceremony itself is an executive-level networking event, where one in every two guests is a C-Suite executive[5]. Previous winners of the Awards include: AELTC, ATP, BT Sport, BBC Sport, Catapult Sports, England Rugby, Fitbit, Hawk-Eye Innovations, NBA, O2, STAT Sports, Ticketmaster, and Spidercam[6].

The Sports Technology Awards Startups

The Sports Technology Awards Startups commenced in 2017 to celebrate innovation in sports technology from young businesses. The awards categories focus on innovation from businesses funded from Seed to Series C. The 2019 awards see the introduction of categories for Best Deal, Senior Executive and Crowdfunded Business[7].

The Startups judging is completed online, independently of and without reference to any other scorer; each judge marks every element of the entry form, then submits a total score for each shortlisted entry. In the case of a tie, at least one other judge is asked to evaluate these in the same way to determine the winner[8].
