Star Trek: These Are The Voyages is the umbrella title given to a series of fan-created short films set in the Star Trek universe, produced and directed by Australian filmmaker Aaron Vanderkley [1]. The series initially consisted of five unconnected short films designed to link within the Enterprise era of the wider franchise.

As with all Star Trek fan productions, use of copyrighted and trademarked properties from the series is allowed so long as the production remains non-commercial. [2] Star Trek: These Are The Voyages... is also one of a handful of fan productions which does not rely on raising funds through crowdfunding platforms like Kickstarter.

Production

"Needs of the Many" entered production as the last in a larger series of unrelated short films in which Vanderkley was working on throughout 2015. In a 2017 interview with Jonathan Lane of FanFilmFactor.com, Vanderkey explains the origins of the film, having "started drafting Needs of the Many while I was on stage, acting in a radio play. Working on a show that was heavily reliant the sound of someone’s voice, I started to write out a conversation between two people in a disaster situation. It made me consider what it must have been like to be a 911 dispatcher on the line to a victim during the 9/11 terrorist attack—two people utterly helpless and just talking to each other until the end. From there, I don’t think the script went through more than one or two drafts before we shot it, across two days—one in late December 2015 and the other in January 2016." [7]

Upon uploading the final film, Vanderkley was surprised by positive feedback from fans and their reception to his films ability to tell a powerful story with limited production elements and within a limited space of time. "Needs of the Many" was seen as poster boy for what was achievable within the Fan Film Guidelines laid down by CBS and Paramount Pictures shortly after its release. [8]

Based on this reaction and "Needs of the Many' receiving a number of a awards and nominations at the 2017 Independent Star Trek Fan Film Awards, Vanderkley set about writing a second anthology story set within the Star Trek: Enterprise timeline, and soon mapped out an entire series of unrelated short films under the title Star Trek: These Are The Voyages....

Reception

News

In 2017, SYFY.com ranked "Needs of the Many" and "The Derelict" in its Top 11 Star Trek Fan Films, as No. 7 and 5 respectively [9] . Of "Needs of the Many", SYFY.com noted:"Taking its title from a line in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan,...this production uses two characters...both trapped in separate sections of an ailing starship drifting toward a minefield...the tone and shot choice are compelling for an amateur short and the screenplay is tight, exhibiting some genuine emotion and suspense." Of the second outing, SYFY.com said: Another excellent short by UK [sic] filmmaker Aaron Vanderkley, with Starfleet officers exploring an abandoned cargo vessel...after it's found drifting helplessly in deep space...this short exhibits a better sense of dramatic structure and acting abilities have been amped up a bit. It features a familiar plot of a deranged survivor trying to take over a starship but it flows well and entertains.
