Sudhir K Jain, born on 4 July, 1959 in Lalitpur, Uttar Pradesh, is an Indian academic and a civil engineer. An expert in the field of earthquake engineering, Jain has made several contributions to the field. In 2014, he was felicitated by the Gujarat Institute of Civil Engineers and Architects (GICEA) for his "contribution to the field of earthquake engineering practice and for his selfless service to a diverse and dynamic learning community in India".^[1]

Jain's fields of specialisation are earthquake engineering and structural dynamics. His primary research interest lies in the areas of seismic design codes, earthquake-resistant design of concrete structures, seismic design of bridges, dynamics of buildings and post-earthquake studies.^[2] His professional interests encompass teaching, research and development in earthquake engineering focused on developing countries, capacity-building against earthquake disasters and academic administration & management with a focus on change for excellence.^[3]

Jain has published over 160 scholarly research papers.^[4] His mantra is simple: Earthquake alone does not kill people, poor engineering does.^[5]

Education

Jain completed his Bachelor of Engineering (BE) degree from University of Roorkee in 1979, and went on to finish Masters in Engineering (MTech) and doctoral (PhD) degrees from the California Institute of Technology, Pasadena^[6] in 1980 and 1983, respectively. He ranked first during his bachelors degree and received three gold medals that year.^[7] These include Chancellor's Gold Medal for being the best student in BE & BArch courses, Vice-chancellor's Gold Medal for having the highest CGPA, and Thomson Memorial Gold Medal for best engineering design - all of them at the University of Roorkee in 1979.^[8]

Earthquake engineering

In 2001, Jain started organising annual summer camps for undergraduate civil engineering students from all over India to motivate them in the profession. These camps became "hugely popular".^[9] Jain also took lead and developed an online portal - Structural Engineering Forum of India (SEFI) - for structural engineers to share their experiences. He co-founded Confined Masonry Network to promote seismically-safe yet economical housing worldwide. The 36 buildings at the new IITGN campus in Palaj constitute the largest engineered application of confined masonry construction in the public sector in India.^[10]

Some of the important beneficiaries of his services as a consultant include World Bank, Proctor and Gamble USA, Indian Railways (RITES), Military Engineering Services, STUP Consultants, Department of Telecommunications, state governments, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, National Thermal Power Corporation, Triveni Structurals, Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited, L&T Gulf and Gujarat State Disaster Management Authority.^[11]

Since 1992, Jain has been conducting continuing education courses on earthquake engineering.^[12][13]

IITK and IITGN

Jain started his career as a lecturer at IIT Kanpur. He was also a visiting faculty member at Asian Institute of Technology, Thailand and visiting scholar/visiting associate professor at the University of Michigan, USA.^[14]

Jain is the Founder Director of IIT Gandhinagar and has steered the institute, with his innovative approach and dynamism, towards brighter shores. The IITGN is a revered name in the field of engineering learning, teaching and research. Jain has introduced various educational reforms at IITGN by offering self-learning mode.^[15] He believes that every student must be treated as an adult, and respected for his opinion and thoughts. The IITGN has also put in place a pioneering foundation programme at its campus. The IIT Council has asked other IITs to follow the same at their campuses.^[16]

Being from the civil engineering background, Jain has achieved another profound feat by having the campus of IITGN designed in a way that marks it as the most sustainable and green educational campus of India.^[17] The academic complex of IITGN has been awarded with several accolades.^[18][19]

Awards and recognition

Jain is or has been a member of several others societies and organisations, in various capacities. These include Gujarat Science Academy, USA's Earthquake Engineering Research Institute, American Concrete Institute, American Society of Civil Engineers, Indian Society of Earthquake Technology, Association of Consulting Civil Engineers (India), Indian Society of Structural Engineers, Indian Institution of Bridge Engineers, Indian Concrete Institute, Indian Buildings Congress, Indian Roads Congress, Institution of Engineers (India) and Indian Society for Technical Education.^[20][21][22]

Apart from this, several accolades honours have been bestowed upon Jain. These include US Science and Technology Fellowship (1994), Best Paper Award of Indian Society of Earthquake Technology (1991), Best Paper Award of Indian Society of Earthquake Technology (1989), Robert A Millikan Fellowship (Caltech, 1982-83) and National Merit Scholarship (1973-79).^[23] In 1973-79, two Masters' theses by Jain were awarded the ISTE National Award for the Best MTech Thesis in Civil Engineering (First prize, 2002) [Intensity Attenuation in Indian Earthquakes] and ISTE National Award for the Best MTech Thesis in Civil Engineering (Second prize, 2001) [Empirical Relationships].^[24]

Books/journals

Jain has authored and contributed to several books on earthquake engineering. These included: Earthquake Engineering: An ICJ Compilation (guest authored), Earthquake Rebuilding in Gujarat, India (authored)^[25] and Engineering Response to Hazards of Terrorism (authored), International Handbook of Earthquake Engineering (contributed chapters), and Keeping Schools Safe in Earthquakes (contributed chapters).^[26]

Jain has also contributed to several international journals. These include Earthquake Spectra (technical editor), World Housing Encyclopedia (Editor, Asia Region), Earthquake Engineering Practice (Scribe), Earthquake Engineering and Structural Dynamics (Member, Advisory Editorial Board), Earthquake Engineering and Engineering Vibrations (Member, Editorial Board), International Handbook of Earthquake & Engineering Seismology (Member, Editorial Advisory Board) and International Handbook of Earthquake & Engineering Seismology (Member, Editorial Advisory Board). He has been guest editor for the special issues on Earthquake Resistant Construction, Lessons from Recent Earthquakes and Earthquake Engineering: Some Recent Trends of The Indian Concrete Journal.^[27]

Jain's reports on Analytical Models for the Dynamics of Buildings has been widely circulated.^[28] During his tenure with IIT Kanpur, he was also involved in video documentation of The Killari (Latur) Maharashtra Earthquake of September 1993.^[29][30]
