A superblock is a special block on the disk that contains metadata on the filesystem. The metadata stored in the superblock varies between filesystems but generally includes the total size of the filesystem, the size of a block, and the number of sectors stored on the disk..^[1]^[2]

Ext4

In the Ext4 filesystem the superblock notably keeps track of the following: ^[2]

Total inode count
Total block count
Free block count
Free inode count
Filesystem state
Operating system that created the filesystem

Ext4 also supports the storage of redundant copies of the superblock to help with data recovery in case one of the superblocks should become corrupted.

FAT32

In the FAT32 filesystem the Boot Sector is the equivalent of the Unix superblock. It contains the following information: ^[1]

bytes per sector
number of reserved sectors
Media descriptor type (e.g. Floppy disk, Hard Drive)
Number of hidden sectors
