}} Dr. S. V. Gupta (Satyavir Gupta, born 8 January 1933) is an Indian metrologist. He was the Director of Weights and Measures at the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Government of India and the Head of Mass Metrology at the National Physical Laboratory of India until his retirement in 1991.[1] EducationDr. S. V. Gupta completed his M. Sc. in Physics in 1955 from Allahabad University.[2] In 1963, he received his M. Sc. in Mathematics from Agra University. Subsequently, he received his PhD in Optics from Delhi University in 1971 under the mentorship of Dr. Debrat Sen. CareerAt NPL, Dr. S. V. Gupta was the Head of Mass Metrology where he led the design, fabrication, and rollout of model weights and measures as per international standards across India. During a two year tenure as Director for Weights and Measures, he led the drafting of the [https://archive.india.gov.in/business/consumer_rights/measures_act.php Weights and Measures Act of 1976], establishing standards for the country.[3] He was also a founding member of the Metrology Society of India and served as its General Secretary for seven years [4][5], working there to establish MAPAN, a quarterly scientific journal on metrology. Dr. Gupta also worked under the aegis of UNIDO as a consultant to establish standards for countries including Cyprus, Oman, and Vietnam.[6]. AwardsIn 2004, Dr. S. V.
