Swirl Season first gained recognition in 2017 after the release of his debut mixtape, Gateway 2 Greatness 2. His music can be described as having a southern hip hop style with edgy content containing lyrical themes regarding topics based his personal relationships, love, money, luxury, power, religion, and the every-day struggles of the average American. Swirl Season is known for being a relatively happy person yet, rebellious, fairly quiet and often found isolated from the outside world, spending consecutive days alone.
Early LifeKeshawn Rashad Davis was born on Monday, January 13, 1997, in Martin, Tennessee[1], the youngest of five children and the son of Rodney Davis and Tina Davis. Swirl Season was heavily influenced by his older brothers early in life. Their names: Rodney Davis, Bradley Davis, and Jordan Davis (Jordan Over-Yonder). They grew up in a small home on North Division Street in Union City, Tennessee[2] and spent most of their time playing outdoors around the neighborhood. Swirl Season spent little personal time with his parents who were in their mid twenties and taking care of five growing children. They spent a majority of their time working. Adults in the neighborhood helped raise them early. Their nearest neighbor, Mrs. Francis, an elderly African American woman, would bake pies for "Swirl Season" monthly from a walnut tree shared in their back yard while her husband, Crane, a Caucasian man, would take them on rides around the neighborhood on his lawn mower, and a nearby neighbor, Uncle Tom-Tom, also a Caucasian man, would open his home to them during the day. Their grandmother, Lois, who had a great impact on their lives. She eventually moved directly across from their home to help keep an extra eye on the children. The boys made close friends with the other kids in the neighborhood and often left home for most of the day to go on adventures in the woods. Eventually, the children in the neighborhood found an empty dirt area located off of a rocky road that lead to the other side of the city. They turned this spot into a secret bike park that they called, "The Ramps." Swirl Season was the youngest in the group and had barely known how to ride a bike at this time, so he spent most of his time standing and watching. The city police eventually found the park and began to monitor the area daily. The kids would hide in the trees when the police officers would pass through until the park was eventually destroyed. In 2003, while entering second grade, his family moved to Martin, Tennessee. A twenty minute drive from Union City, where the boys grew up. Swirl was forced to make new friends. After only four short months, the family packed up and moved north to Cadiz, Kentucky[3], where his oldest brother, [https://www.usi.edu/sports/mbasket/Player_Bios/Davis_07.asp Rodney][4], quickly became a star basketball player at Trigg County High School from 2003-2007. Rodney paved the way for a successful athletic future for his younger brothers by setting records for the Trigg County Basketball team with his three point sharp shooting and bringing in college scouts from all over the country. He lived a short basketball career at Murray State University and The [https://www.usi.edu/ University of South Indiana] before graduating from Tennessee State University in 2013. His second oldest brother, Bradley[5], went on to play basketball at Mid-Continent University on a scholarship and graduated from The University of Tennessee at Martin. During this time, Swirl Season had found himself to be a great student in school and was assigned by his fourth grade teacher, Joy Champion[6], who was murdered in 2014 at aged 60, to raise the American flag outside for the school every day during his fourth grade year. This was where he originally found his inspiration to be a leader. She often isolated him, expressing her beliefs in him throughout his year with her, and often expressed his unique character qualities to other students in the classroom. He began his sports career that summer while his father began coaching the middle school girl's basketball team, winning multiple district championships and coaching the team to the state tournament. Swirl began playing little league football for the "Black" team where found his natural talent over the other children. He also began playing basketball and quickly was projected to become a star athlete by leading his team to the championship nearly every year during his transition from elementary school to middle school and leading the All-Star team. He once scored 26 points in fifth grade for his grandmother, Lois, who came to town to watch him play. He was so good that he began to hangout and play travel basketball with his older brother, Jordan, who was two school grades above him and had already established an athletic duo with his new best friend, DeonQuez Nance. Swirl Season joined the 7th grade (13-0[7]) and 8th grade basketball teams as a sixth grader. Both teams went on to win the district championship that year and played in the state tournament. Unfortunately, Swirl Season had to miss the 7th grade state basketball tournament. He traveled with the 8th grade team weeks later, where they lost in the early rounds of the tournament. Later that year, a majority of the 8th grade basketball team began running middle school track, where his father, Rodney, took the head coaching position. Swirl Season was having the time of life. In August of 2009, Swirl Season was 12 years old. Entering the 7th grade, the first year that he did not have to ride the bus to school. He began riding with his brother, Bradley every day. Bradley owned his own vehicle and introduced to Swirl Season, his first taste of underground hip-hop music. Bradley played artists like Lil Wayne, Gucci Mane, and Rick Ross on the rides to school in the mornings. Swirl Season instantly fell in love with the sound off bass and instruments. In September of that year, his family decided to move back to Martin, Tennessee. Not wanting to leave his happy life, he was forced to reinvent himself once again. He joined the Martin Middle School basketball team right away where they went on to win the district championship for the next two years. Jordan[8] and Keshawn both attended and graduated from Westview High School in 2013 and 2015. CareerLooking for a way to stand out in a new school, Swirl Season began growing his famous dreadlocks in 2010 and received his first mini laptop for Christmas that year. He began recording freestyle music right away. Myspace[9] was now the most popular website in the world. T.I., Kanye West, Jay-Z, and Lil Wayne had already released their hit song, "Swagga Like Us," influencing Swirl Season to buy his first pair of skinny jeans. He created a Myspace band page under Lil Swirl and began releasing music instantly. It spread throughout his school and quickly added to his popularity as the new kid. He then quit sports after leading his basketball team to the state tournament and winning multiple awards along the way. He continued to attract attention from music by releasing mixtapes online and selling CD's to his classmates. He released a mixtape titled Gateway 2 Greatness in 2015, months before his high school graduation, and it gained popularity throughout his hometown and surrounding cities. He also connected with a young producer, [https://soundcloud.com/razoronthetrack RazorOnTheTrack][10], from London, England online and signed a short contract with his label, [https://soundcloud.com/1subzeromusic Subzero Music Group][11]. They worked on a few tracks together such as "Chosen One," "[https://www.reverbnation.com/razoronthetrack/song/22712796-lil-swirl-too-prod-by-razoronthetrack Too][12]," and "[https://open.spotify.com/album/0JMIaK5HsTyPpN0nj53Gs0 Sideline][13]" (with [https://open.spotify.com/album/0JMIaK5HsTyPpN0nj53Gs0 Yung Shonen][13]) until the young artists and producers went their separate ways creatively. 2017: Gateway 2 Greatness 2"[https://www.indiesound.com/index.php?a=profile&u=swirlseason Gateway 2 Greatness 2][14]" was a digital mixtape released by Swirl Season in April of 2017 that quickly gained worldwide recognition and is probably his most known project to date. It was an experimental mixture of music expressing his life and lyrical skills in different music styles. It featured tracks such as "[https://www.indiesound.com/index.php?a=track&id=7336 Paid Again][14]" which was produced by RazorOnTheTrack, an up-tempo southern U.S./England combo track mixed with smooth bubbly instruments, heavy 808's, and fast lyrics, alongside "[https://www.indiesound.com/index.php?a=track&id=7334 Car Shoppin'][14]" which was recorded in his hometown of Union City, Tennessee with [https://www.bing.com/search?q=drizz+maddox&form=EDGEAR&qs=PF&cvid=4503a14bd6e24d86a9ab400cf551cd3d&cc=US&setlang=en-US&elv=AXK1c4IvZoNqPoPnS%21QRLOMLl6hwBvmtWW52U4uPYSK%21BdSG1rbXKACjJvyiU4KWPTrOPB74YUp2CCoOs2SDcxYrXWIN6fsA*q1YCT5bDb38 Drizz Maddox] (founder of Team Astute brand) and Arizona (a local engineer). A raunchy track titled, "[https://www.indiesound.com/index.php?a=track&id=7335 Dreams Too Big For Love]," debuted as the number one single from the project as he went on to perform the single throughout Tennessee and Kentucky during 2017. 2018: Gateway 3: The Forbidden Odyssey, Gateway 3.5 (Reloaded), Romeo's Dead. Romeo's My Hero“[https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/gateway-3-the-forbidden-odyssey/1403878969 Gateway 3: The Forbidden Odyssey][15]” released on June 27, 2018. The cover art, a portrait of Swirl Season designed by a graphic artist, Stetson Fields, the Executive Visual Designer for Swirl Season's music and brand since 2015. It was titled as “The modern Mona Lisa[16]” by researchers. The album become one of the first album covers to display an Italian Renaissance[17] styled halo[18] on a human figure since the 1850’s. The halo became nearly extinct when a new era of art known as “realism[19]” arose. His second project landed 8 tracks that were executive written and engineered by Swirl Season in the span of 5 months (January 2018 - May 2018). The album is an honest recollection of his sudden broken lifestyle which he called a “forbidden odyssey.” The album was written and recorded during the lowest times of his young life and was the result of heartbreak and lead to his isolation from the outside world. It featured emotional tracks such as "[15][https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/romeo/1403878969?i=1403879414 Romeo]" which quickly became his most streamed song ever and was titled after Shakespeare[20]'s famous tragedy, Romeo and Juliet[21], and "[https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/no-way/1403878969?i=1403878987 No Way][15]," which was a written as Swirl Season giving himself personal advice about how to deal with his struggles. It was rumored that he went through several weeks of only one small snack per day when recording the album. It is also believed that he had not eaten for nearly two days while shooting the photo for the album's cover art which explains the pose, blank look on his face, ideology behind the portrait, and title of the album. He never addressed the rumors publicly but people close to him have confirmed the theory. "[https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/gateway-3-5-reloaded/1435111963 Gateway 3.5 (Reloaded)][22]" released in September of 2018 as a combination album. It feature the most popular tracks from Swirl Season's previous two projects. "Gateway 2 Greatness 2" needed to reach the newest music and video streaming platforms such as Apple Music and Spotify. He was able to re-release several of the tracks with the new project. "[https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/romeos-dead-romeos-my-hero/1447820818 Romeo's Dead. Romeo's My Hero][23]" was Swirl Season's final release of 2018. It debuted on December 21, 2018, consisted of seven tracks, and displayed a wide range of music types. The album title revealed Swirl Season's admiration for the genius and flaws of the character, Romeo, in Shakespeare's' Romeo and Juliet. It featured tracks such as "[https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/one-last-call/1447820818?i=1447820824 One Last Call][24]" in which Swirl Season displays his creativity as an artist and plays along with the idea of death and "[https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/my-message-wont-send/1447820818?i=1447820823 My Message Won't Send][25]" which quickly became a top track from the track list. "[https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/my-message-wont-send/1447820818?i=1447820823 Dream Some More][26]" was the lead single ahead of the album release.
