Syed Muhammad Ashraf or SM Ashraf is a novelist, story writer, Sahitya Academy Award winner and Chief Income Tax Commissioner, Kolkata. He was born on 8th July 1957 in Marehra village of Etah district of Uttar Pradesh, India. His family belonged to Qadri Barkati chan of Sufism connected to Abdul Qadir Jilani of Baghdad.

He got the education from Aligarh Muslim University and qualified for Indian Civil Services. He is instrumental in establishing Al Barkaat Management and Education Institutes, Al Barkat Public Schools at various places in north India[1]. He is the younger brother of Syed Muhammad Ameen Mian Qaudri, who is a Sufi leader and professor at Aligarh Muslim University.

Contribution in literature

He has made a valuable contribution to literature. The stories written by him are outstanding on merit and negated various misconceptions while showcasing human emotions.[2]

Recognition

His work has been published by international journals in India and abroad. He was appointed a member of National Council for the promotion of Urdu language (NCPUL) in 2008 and was invited to deliver a lecture in Virginia University, U.S in 2009.
