TerminOrgs..[1] is a group of terminology professionals who manage terminology data in large organizations as part of enterprise-level content management[2]. The aim of the group is to develop guidelines and best practices for managing terminology in large corporate and organizational settings.

History

TerminOrgs was created in 2010 following the dissolution of the Localization Industry Standards Association (LISA) . Between 2003 and 2010, several founding members of TerminOrgs had been active in the LISA Terminology Special Interest group (SIG), which produced a number of publications, surveys, guidelines, and research reports. These SIG members recruited additional professionals and formed TerminOrgs, a non-profit association operating under the auspices of the Language/Terminology Translation and Acquisition Consortium (LTAC)[3]

Activities and publications

TerminOrgs has a growing membership of terminology professionals who collaborate on resources, processes, and publications that assist terminologists working in large organizations, and the terminology industry as a whole.

It developed and maintains the TBX-Basic standard[4][5][6][7]

and the Terminology Starter Guide[8][9], as well as documents that promote skills and training opportunities for terminologists. In partnership with LTAC, TerminOrgs also created and manages the data category repository, which is an open resource about the types of data one could include in a terminology database[10].

TerminOrgs is an A-Category Liaison to all five sub-committees of ISO Technical Committee 37: Language and Terminology[11]. As such, it provides input on behalf of the terminology industry to ISO draft standards that relate to terminology management, translation, and other related fields.

TerminOrgs' members have presented papers and organized workshops about terminology management in industry conferences such as LocWorld[12] and TOTh[13]

As the field of terminology management grows with the knowledge-based society, it has become clear that the demands skills, methods, and technologies specific to large organizations often diverge from, or run counter to, mainstream academic theories and methodologies in the field of terminology[14]. TerminOrgs provides an international platform for the development of terminology approaches that are suited for large-scale production environments[15]. For example, TerminOrgs promotes the repurposing of terminological resources outside the traditional sphere of translation, into areas such as controlled authoring and search engine optimization (SEO)[16][17], and has demonstrated return on investment for managing terminology in enterprises and institutions.[18]
