TERMSYMPO or the Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Research Postgraduate Research Symposium is a biennial meeting that was attended and initiated by the postgraduate students in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine research (TERM) in Malaysia. It serves as a platform to share current knowledge in TERM among the postgraduate students and provide access to experts and mentors in the TERM field, for the students to draw their inspiration from.

History

On 14th February 2017, 11 postgraduate students of Tissue Engineering Centre and Department of Physiology of the Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) Medical Centre led by Ms Khairunnisa Ramli attended the first meeting to plan for the inception of the first TERMSYMPO.

Mission

The main mission of TERMSYMPO is to empower students and young scientists in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine by:

1. Connecting the postgraduate students to academic experts and renowned scientists.

2. Creating a platform for the postgraduate students to present, share and discuss their research findings.

3. Providing access for the postgraduate students to network among their inter- and intra-varsity peers.

4. Providing a conducive environment to nurture scientific spirit among the new generation of scientist.

Honoring the Past, Treasuring the Present, Shaping the Future

The 1st TERMSYMPO was held in the Auditorium of UKM Medical Centre in 7th November 2017. It was jointly organised by the Tissue Engineering Centre UKM, Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Society of Malaysia (TESMA) and Young Scientist Network- Academy Science of Malaysia (YSN-ASM).^[1] The organising committee was mainly from UKM but was supported by postgraduate representatives from other universities in Malaysia such as UM, UIA, UPM, USM, Monash University as well as Taylor’s University.

The theme for the 1st TERMSYMPO focus on nurturing scientific spirit among the postgraduate students by drawing inspiration from senior scientists that have reached a significant milestone in their career. Participants were inspired by the keynote lecture delivered by the founder of the first tissue engineering lab and the first president of TESMA, Prof Dato' Dr Ruszymah Idrus, detailing her journey from a student to a key opinion leader in TERM in Malaysia.^[2] Participants also were inspired by the Meet the Expert sharing session, where they have a chance to interact directly with academic experts and renowned industry scientists in the field from the YSN-ASM network.

Nurturing Industrial-Driven Next Generation of Scientists

Planning for the 2nd TERMSYMPO has already in progress with the tentative theme that aims to prepare postgraduate students for the industry.
