Terry a. O'Neal is an American poet, author, screenwriter, activist for youth literacy, and educator. O'Neal has published five books of poetry, one fiction novel, and two children's books. O'Neal studied at California State University of Sacramento in 1991-1993, where she majored in Criminal Justice before deciding to work full-time, attend school part-time, and become a writer. Her literary journey began in the mid 1990s, during her young-adult years as a wife and mother, while working odd-end jobs, and attending school at a local community college in the city of Sacramento, California, the county in which she resided. At the turn of the century, the budding poet released her first book entitled Motion Sickness, followed by her second volume of poetry The Poet Speaks In Black in 2001 that featured one of her most popular poems entitled Who Knows of the Wilted Rose. Between her second and third book, Ev'ry Little Soul (2002), O'Neal had nearly completed her first fiction novel Sweet Lavender, that was released in 2003. As a humanitarian and advocate of youth literacy, in 2005, O'Neal founded her own non-profit, Lend Your Hand, Educating the World's Children. A non-profit organization designed to provide disadvantaged youth and students achieve academic success. As a subsidiary of the organization, O'Neal launched the National Black History Bee program, a trivia competition that would teach students about the contributions that African Americans have given to society and to the world. {Cite web}

As a result of her profound literary works and community activism, in 2006, O'Neal was acknowledged alongside other literary greats as one of the greatest Black female writers of our time in a book called "Literary Divas: The Top 100+ Admired African American Women in Literature". Not only was O'Neal passionate about teaching, she was equally passionate about learning. The writer obtained her Master's of Arts in Education from Ashford University in 2012.
