At the peak of his career, he was one of the top American officials. After being diagnosed with Huntington's disease in 2003, Vaughn continued refereeing until his retirement in 2012. Vaughn officiated a handful of major international events, such as the CONCACAF Champions League in 2009 and 2010, then FIFA U-20 World Cup 2007 and the CONCACAF Gold Cup.[3][4] Vaughn is inducted in the NISOA Hall of Fame. In 2016, the Iowa Referee Committee renamed their referee academy after Vaughn.
