The Albrechts of Rothenburg ob der Tauber 1493-1806 is a 2018 non-fiction book written by New Zealander Nicholas Albrecht.

Summary

This book follows the Albrecht family as they consolidate their position as an important patrician family.  Set in the Imperial Free City of Rothenburg ob der Tauber, during the time of the Holy Roman Empire. This period covers the great events and movements that shaped Western civilisation, including the Reformation, the Thirty Years War and the Enlightenment.^[1]

Opportunities to translate and comment upon four theses from successive generations of the same family, each covering a different aspect of the legal system in German states of the Holy Roman Empire, and written at such a pivotal period in history, are extremely rare. Each Albrecht’s thesis reflects, to some extent, the times in which he was writing and betrays each author’s stance on key contemporary issues. Every thesis contains surprises, many of which will challenge what you think you know about common attitudes of the period in which they were written. The Albrechts were taught by some of the great minds behind the formation of a peculiarly German national identity, but what comes through most clearly of all is their overreaching humanity and the fair-mindedness of what was obviously a quite extraordinary family.^[2]   

This book makes an important contribution to prosopographical research on one of the leading families that influenced the history of the former imperial free city of Rothenburg ob der Tauber. It offers a detailed overview of the contributions that members of successive generations of the Albrecht family made in helping to govern Rothenburg in various different judicial, religious and administrative roles, and includes several helpful maps and finely-reproduced images of leading Albrecht men of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The author also sets the history of the Albrechts (and Rothenburg) into the wider context of early modern German history, noting in particular the Albrechts’ participation in developments in the law and legal theory.^[3]
