They are considered to be "Pioneers of the Punk Movement" [1], in Pennsylvania, USA. They were the first band found, to be playing punk rock, in the Lehigh Valley Area. "The Clap" was originally started by Johnny Joseph Loftus, the lead singer, bass player, songwriter and producer (of strain productions) and two high school friends , Mike Rex & Robbie Brungard, in Catasauqua, PA. Genres: Punk rock, old school punk, vintage punk rock [2]Labels: strain records, Dionysus Records (Baccus); Killed by Death records vol.22 Original Members:John Loftus: Birth name: John Joseph Loftus Born: 31 January, 1961; Catasauqua PA USA Occupations: singer, song writer, musician, record producer Instruments: Lead singer, Bass Associated Acts: Nostalgia Crisis Mike Rex: guitar Robbie Brungard: drummer Current Members:Art Zawodny: guitar, vocals TomDaugherty “Dox”: guitar, vocals Paul Boruch: drummer Other Members: Matt Roman, Randy Roth, Carl Schleptis, Mike Dipaulo, ShawnYanchuck, Mark Kale, Frank Foe, Ron Wexler Website:https://www.reverbnation.com/theclap2[3]About The BandThe Punk Rock Music that "The Clap" creates has an arousing, explosive sound, with some of the early songs expressing the insanity and insubordination of a sexual culture, like in their songs "Insubordinate"[4], found on their "Clean Living & Penicillin" record.[5] and "Burning Drip" .[6] Found on their "If Looks Could Kill" album[7]. This theme is reflected in their motto "The Clap-it ain't nothin til you catch it".[8] Other songs, manifest "The Clap's" own style of punk music. Some of which, entice the audience to dance, shout out lyrics and have a genuinely good time! In fact, in the Clap's earlier years, Johnny could be seen performing songs, that include amazing "jumps"! Most of those, early years, events were unrecorded, as video dynamics were not so advanced. However, some of his " jumps" can be seen in this rare footage video, from a dance party, at the Jacksonian, Nazareth, PA, in 2004[9] Make no mistake, The Clap has been and still is persistent, in all of their endeavors. When Johnny says there will be a show, there will be a show! They have toured both nationally and internationally. In fact, in an article called "Reassembled Clap Closes One Chapter, Opens Another" [10] mention is made of a 1999 European tour. The article also represents a turning point in "The Clap's" history. "The Clap" originally, Johnny ( band leader), Mike Rex (guitarist) & Robbie Brungard (drummer), were active from 1978-1990. They released their first single in 1982 called "Don't Say No" with a "B" side "Killed by Kindness"[10], that has been sold and listened to internationally. In 1990 the original band members, Mike & Robbie called it quits, to pursue other life goals. So, Johnny wanting to continue with his musical endeavors, continued to play, with his cover band "Nostagia Crisis", while seeking out new members, to continue the punk band "The Clap".[3] The line up for the band has changed many times since 1991. The clap members have included the following musicians: Johnny Loftus, Mike Rex, Robb[5]ie Brungard, Matt Roman, Carl Schkepits, Mike Dipaulo, Shawn Yanchuck, Mark Kale, Frank Foe and Ron Wexler. The Clap has performed on tours in the US & in Europe. They have recorded singles, EP's & albums including "Clean living & penicillin", "If Looks Could Kill" & Look before you Leap". These can be purchased through The Clap's websites [11]and on sites like Amazon[12] Current Band MembersNowadays, that is in the 2nd decade of the 21st century, "The Clap" continues to tour & record. They perform with other bands in the Lehigh Valley, too. They are currently working on a new album and hope to build the funds, to support the new LP, by playing as many shows as they can. Prospects include US, Canada & hopefully, a Eurpoean tour. The personnel in the band never seems to be settled: Loftus is the only constant. Nonetheless, he feels confident about the current crew: Tom "Dox" Daugherty and Art Zawodny on guitars and newcomer Paul Boruch on drums.Zawodny, a self-described "corporate geek," joined the band in 2013 because it was a rarity: A group of men his age who were touring and playing original music, not covers. He's lent the group some stability, managing its finances and arranging its tours. For him, each trip on the road is a "rock and roll vacation."Daugherty, who works as an engineer, has been a fixture in the local punk scene almost as long as Loftus has. They've played together sporadically over the years -- and sometimes "butted heads," Daugherty said. But a few years ago, Loftus bet Daugherty that he would end up in The Clap before long. He was right.(Loftus said that band co-founders Brungard and Rex, who was also married to Loftus' late sister, have indicated they might be open to a reunion sometime in the future.)[13]The Clap's current band members include the following people: John Joseph Loftus- Lead singer and Bass guitar Tom Daugherty "Dox"- guitar & vocals Art Zawodny- Guitar and vocals Paul Boruch - Drummer of Nunya business.com Songs & Videos
