{{No footnotes|date=July 2018}}The Countrymen are a folk rock harmony band based in Launceston, Cornwall. They are noted for their tight vocal harmonies and material which largely relate to the folklore and heritage of Cornwall and their engaging and humourous live performances. Strangely, only one of the members of the band (Stephen Gilbert) is actually from Cornwall.

They receive many favourable reviews in various media and are widely considered to be currently one of the top unsigned Cornish bands of their genre.

Formation

The band formed in 2016 as a result of meeting at various open mic nights at [https://www.countryman-inn.co.uk/ The Countryman Inn] near Launceston, Cornwall. Band member Paul Callow is the current owner of The Countryman Inn.

Members

Steve Cooksey (Guitar, Stomp Box, Vocals)

Stephen Gilbert (Vocals, Banter)

Ijaz Bhatti (Guitar, Vocals)

Simon Wrench (Bass, Vocals)

Alan (Brin) Brinicombe (Lead Guitar, Vocals)

Paul Callow (Guitar, Vocals)

Material

The band perform a variety of material by local and mainstream artists as well as their own original work. The song "Mrs Chapman's Boys" from their "Trees on the Hill" album was written by well known local comedian Jethro with the song "Last of the Pirateers" on the same album being donated by Chris Morris, formerly of the band Paper Lace, who is a friend of band member Stephen Gilbert.

Gigs

The band have performed, and will be performing throughout 2018 at many major Cornish venues, shows and festivals, including the Eden Project, Calstock Arts Centre, Falmouth International Sea Shanty Festival, [https://www.rockoysterfestival.co.uk/ Rock Oyster Festival], World Pasty Championships, [https://www.newlynfishfestival.org.uk/ Newlyn Fish Festival], Charles Causley Festival, Kindred Spirits Festival, Fowey Regatta, Falmouth Folk & Cider Festival, [https://www.cornwallfolkfestival.com/ Cornwall Folk Festival], [https://www.lostfest.co.uk/ LostFest], [https://www.falmouthweek.co.uk/ Falmouth Week], [https://callingtonmayfest.weebly.com/ MayFest], Launceston Show and Royal Cornwall Show.

Television & Radio

The band has performed live and been interviewed on BBC Radio Cornwall on several occasions.

In March 2018 they performed the song "The Band Played Trelawney" by local composer Mike O'Connor at the Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry [https://cornwalls-regimentalmuseum.org Museum] in Bodmin which was later shown on BBC Spotlight in commemorating the 100th anniversary of the last British Regiment believed to have been played into battle.
