TheCubicle.us is an e-commerce store located in New York, USA. The company was founded in August 2011, by co-owners James Chang and Phil Yu. They sell a wide variety of puzzles, and over the years have expanded into an international specialty cubing store. They support a team of world class speedcubers, known as Team Cubicle. Notable members include Mats Valk, Max Park and Lucas Etter.[1] The team has a website dedicated to their likeness, hosted at TeamCubicle.com. TheCubicle sponsors hundreds of speed cubing events each year. [2] They provided sponsorship and on-site vending at Cubing USA Nationals 2017, donating over $17,000 in prize money to top finishers. [3] Currently, TheCubicle.us has three sub-brands: Cubicle Pro Shop, Cubicle Labs and Angstrom Research. Cubicle Pro Shop is a team of specialized cube makers, who custom lube and sticker puzzles. The Cubicle Pro Shop is directed by Rowe Hessler, a two-time former speedcubing U.S. Champion. They customize puzzles on-demand to customers specific requests. These cubes are preferred by many of the world’s most accomplished speed solvers. [4] Each puzzle sold through Cubicle Pro Shop and Cubicle Labs come standard with the “Cubicle Premium Cube Guarantee” extending warranties on their craftmanship for the custom puzzles. This covers issues with lubrication, puzzle tension, magnet placement, sticker quality, and more. Cubicle Labs is the Research & Development Department at TheCubicle.us and focuses on science driven innovation. Cubicle Labs is most well-known for introducing the world's first magnetic speed cubes to the market. [5] Since their launch in 2017, Cubicle Labs has continued to innovate, releasing do-it-yourself magnet kits, magnetic big cubes, and more. Each release under the Cubicle Labs brand is tested thoroughly by members of Team Cubicle. Tweaks to the set-up of the puzzle are made based on team input, testing combinations of tensions, lubes, magnets, etc. Due to this extensive testing process, many Cubicle Labs products are not released to the public until several months after the release of the original puzzle. Angstrom Research is the branch founded by Chris Tran, Cubicle’s Research and Development Director. Angstrom Research specializes in highly experimental products. New releases are aimed at innovating with industry-changing technologies. This service offers a boutique style puzzle buying experience. Many releases are done in limited batches. Angstrom Gravitas and Angstrom Dignitas were the two lubes initially created under Angstrom Research. Gravitas is a high viscosity silicone lube, utilizing micro-friction of two nanoscale compounds for high friction areas. Angstrom Dignitas is a medium viscosity silicone lube, that utilizes micro-scale nitride to create speed and smoothness between pieces. In October 2017, Rubik's filed a lawsuit against TheCubicle claiming trademark infringement and unfair competition. [6] TheCubicle contacted Rubik's to resolve the lawsuit, however both parties could not find a fair settlement. TheCubicle filed a counter lawsuit against Rubik's seeking cancellation of its trademarks, allege antitrust violations and request a declaratory judgment that TheCubicle has not violated Rubik's purported federal and state trademark rights.
