The Cycle is an upcoming video game by Yager Development which was announced in 2018. This is the first self-published game from the developer.^[1] The Cycle is in Alpha since August 2018 on Steam. The release is planned for 2019.

It is a combination of session based first-person shooter matches and quest objectives in an open world. This is a blend of Player versus environment & Player versus player (short: PvEvP)^[2].

Plot

In the game most of the galaxy is controlled by factions, while the outer reaches remain unclaimed. As so called Prospectors, players chose a faction to fulfill quests for and then compete with one another for objectives such as collecting minerals, hunting alien wildlife, and more. They can chose to work together, avoid conflict or take down the competition.^[3]

Gameplay

The Cycle is a competitive quest shooter, combining first-person shooter, survival and quest mechanics in one game. It takes place on and around the fictional planet Fortuna III and the title refers to a global storm raging on its surface, which gives the player only limited time to complete objectives.^[1] On the surface players can explore an alien world rich in minerals, resources and alien wildlife. The current match time is 20 minutes. If a player does not evacuate the planet within that time, they will be trapped by the storm.

There are currently two game modes available – squad and solo mode. In the latter, temporary alliances can be formed with another player, but can also be broken at any time.^[4] To win the game, players have to finish the most contracts and escape the planet. It’s not necessary to fight other players directly and players can play the game while avoiding PvP encounters. However, the game offers different contracts which are either more PvP or PvE focused.^[5]^[6]

Development

The idea for The Cycle is based on an internal game jam. After a four month prototyping phase in sumer 2017 the game production started in February 2018. Around Gamescom 2018 the game was unveiled to the public while the developer is doing monthly alpha tests since then on Steam. The beta is planned for spring 2019^[7]
