The DaPonte String Quartet is a professional repertory ensemble, presently (2018) and for the past twenty-three years resident in Maine. Taking their name from Mozart’s librettist, the group’s mission is to relate musical text and its human/historical context through each score they perform. The Quartet took form at the Esther Boyer College of Music at Temple University, Philadelphia, in 1991. They removed to Maine initially on a three-year Rural Residency program grant, jointly administered by Chamber Music America and the National Endowment for the Arts, between 1993 and 1996. The group coached with Edgar Ortenberg, the last living member of the Budapest String Quartet, for six years, between 1991 and Ortenberg’s death in 1997. Their violinists alternate between first and second chairs.
